First time to post, but I have learned a lot from everyone over the past couple of years. I currently own a 1998 S1W and a 2000 X1. I've got a question about the X1. The primary chain is hitting the top of the case. I verified this by opening up the case and finding grooves being worn into the top by the chain. I've adjusted the chain to both the low end and high end of what the manual suggests, but haven't been able to stop the chain from hitting the top of the case. Is there another reason the chain could be hitting the case? A bit of history as well. Bike has 7K miles. The case was dry when I bought it, but internals looked really good when I opened it up. All help is appreciated.

Mine got loose for two reasons. I got lazy and was planning a new clutch. So it did some of that clearance work on top too. I had the updated tensioner installed but after 34k it was shot. I just put a new clutch and shoe on last year. The chain passed my measurement tests.

It was dry? I would be pulling the transmission out and throwing that and ESPECIALLY the chain in the scrap heap. You dont want to die on your Buell do you?

I adjust primary chain by ear/ sound.

too tight sounds too tight.
too loose sounds too loose (chain dragging on the case is too loose)
I go for dragging on the case, back half a turn until it's not.

It's important for the motor to be hot, everything at it's running temperature.

If it was dry, is it possible that the clutch bearings are shot and allowing the basket to flop around?

I would strongly suggest popping off the cover and seeing if it's wobbling.
This would also allow you to see if the adjuster shoe thing is the cheesy old version or the newer "not breaking" version.

I hope it's just the shoe thing because that like a $15 part and effortless to replace.

You can see if the clutch basket is wobbly without taking the primary cover off, just remove the derby cover and try to rock it back and forth by hand.

If the chain had one speck of rust on it, throw it away. If it stretched on the upper side while partially dry, it will never be adjustable, with tight spots and loose spots.

Hopefully, it is just the old design shoe fully worn out.

You've all given me some good suggestions about how to troubleshoot further. I'll come back with an update this weekend.

Remember the clutch basket nut is left hand thread.

Make sure you're measuring the chain movement correctly. First you push the chain down, then push it up. You measure the entire distance you can move the chain. If you just measure the movement in one direction and adjust based on that, it'll be too loose.
