I know this is a common problem but there's all kinds of opinions on what's the best way to tackle this. All help advice appreciated. Sam

Hoping I can fire it as is and ride it the 3 miles from storage to where I have tools without it spitting oil all over the battery from the breather pipe. Suggestions? Thx

Three miles will plenty to pump the sump clear and move the oil into the tank where it belongs. Take the air cleaner element out for the short drive.

If the oil is leaking onto the battery box, perhaps it is primary oil coming out of the transmission vent hose from a bad crankcase engine seal.

Remove the clutch cover. If a quart of primary/engine oil mix spills out, you need to replace the crank seal under the front primary sprocket. It's not that hard. Now that the level is below the derby cover, you can ride the three miles home.

I would just, remove breather hose from air cleaner, have a catch canto put it into, start the bike run it at, 1,500rpm for a few minutes see if oil being pumped to oil tank or if it is coming out the breather. then hook breather hose back up. and then ride the three miles, would be better if could ride bit further. to warm oil up too.

Absolutely, if you have a breather hose, just hold it over a pan. I thought your engine was bolt-vented like mine.

My approach with my old sportster was to take the cover and element off of the intake for the first start of the spring.
Pretty easy to catch it with a rag.

I always needed to give it a shot of ether the first time so the aircleaner would be open anyways.

I am curious to find out how much volume comes out. My ironhead would only spit out a couple of ounces but the EVO bikes seem to dribble back more for some reason.

A great addition to the tuber would be 07 up oil pump, as scavenges oil better. that has always been a Harley problem when you rev motor high, they used to pump oil in ok but could not scavenge fast enough so threw oil out breather at high rev. but with 07 up scavenging more oil than it pumps in it would solve that problem. i used to have a kick start only high performance Harley. that on start up would throw oil out breather, did not matter if i road it every day, got that bad i kept a peg on oil return hose so oil could not run in to cases. i would kick start then quickly remove the peg and un crimp the hose. i did this for years even bought and fitted new oil pump put new seat in the check ball seat, new check ball. & still would throw oil out the breather hose. then as was high mile motor & due for rebuild . i discovered the cast piston had a slight crack in top edge. fitted new pistons & rings sunnen honed the bore serviced heads new bottom end crank pin & bearings
on start up no oil out the breather & never needed to use peg on oil in hose. a broken piston ring will cause that too.

thought i would also mention, if cases full with oil, it is hard on starter, i learnt that kick starting , could feel how hard it was with more pressure in crank case as piston travels down the bore.
