5.5 is just a ball park number, set it where ever you get bike to start and idle well, every bike is different.

well reset the TPS fired up still running bad, so I remove the elbow and air filter and started it. still no different, but I read about a faulty ET sensor and decided to unplug it and see whats happens. bike ran real good, idle was good. put the filter and elbow back on runs like crap again. Im just not getting something, I thought this old bike would be a easy fix lol boy was I wrong. I think I will give it and me a break for a day or so and try to figure it out again.

That was very informative Alf.
Wish I had seen it in early 2008.

Thanks for the info Alfau, I haven't had a chance to check the timing yet just trying to get it to idle has been a thorn in my side, but I don't give up on anything. i removed the ET sensor from the head and broke the wire in the process so im gonna have track one down to replace. i read they were discontinued, but they sell a replacement one, newer style comes with sensor and new style plug. FI is a learning experience for me, but like everything else it just takes time and patience and im short on both. It cold at night here in Kentucky i went out about dark and she fired right up and idled fine. I'll try to let it run a little tomorrow and see how that goes.

Short lived on the running fine deal its runs for about 20 seconds then realizes the ET sensor is not present, low fuel light comes on then it dies, wait a few starts right back up and repeats the process above, gonna get a new ETS and start all over again. Thanks for the info and help guys I appreciate it.

ET sensor is tricky piece of shit.
You need a special tool (socket with a slot to accommodate the wire)

Be aware that the silicone end is easily damaged and usually as the sensor is bolted into place. check it for damage before you gently nip it up.
I use a thin washer under the sensor to prevent it bottoming out too hard. treat it with kid-gloves. the new sensor comes with some sort of grease.

Also it may pay to check that the return cable to the throttle body is adjusted correctly. it pulls the throttle valve closed when you close the throttle. Physically shutting the valve with the twist grip. there is a return spring but that cable can be too short preventing correct function plus that return spring isn't very strong .

Lance should have the bits you need.

Yeah alfa I found that out the hard way. Apparently it WAS working right but something else is out of wack. I've got a lot of work to do to the old bike. I need the part# for the o-ring that is used on the clutch cable. Thought about just going to the local hardware store and trying to compare and get one, I'm losing gear oil out of the clutch cable.

Per my '01 X-1 parts book, the O ring is p/n 11179.

The threaded portion of the cable assy that screws into the primary is Very Delicate. I usually undo the cable at the lever and lay it out straight on the floor to remove it. I screw it in until I feel it 'touch', then maybe a 1/4 (or less) turn more.

Hope this helps, Dave

Yeah I read they were very finicky. Got another question I looked and kind find out what it is, there is a small switch on the left handlebar that has a headlight image above it. It's not the hi/low beam switch it's on around towards the front of the bike. Doesn't do anything that I can figure out yet. I did notice that I have a real small bulb below my headlight in the housing that is blown. I thought it might have something to do with it but not sure if this is a dumb question just be easy on me I'm a newb.

That's a momentary high beam switch (that's European style).

The headlight has an accessory light. When you park at the end of a row of cars it can be left on so cage drivers don't cram into a parked bike at night (that's European style too : ) )

If the oil coming out of your clutch cable smells like engine oil or begins pumping out of the top of the cable, your crankcase oil seal is bad. The stock clutch cable is weak where the housing fits into the ferrule and will leak with the slightest twisting stress.

I replaced three of them and then started using an aftermarket stainless steel braided cable.

Let me fix that for you. : )

When the crank seal goes, it will usually spray transmission fluid out the vent long before it comes out the clutch cable. It's easy to tell, because it conveniently sprays it all over the back wheel, as indicated by you doing a slow motion donut pulling away from a stop sign in front of a very shocked neighbor out mowing his lawn. DAMHIK. When it happens, make your best "I meant to do that" face, and go home and replace your crank seal. ; )

LOL.
When mine went bad, it sprayed my rear brake just before I climbed mount Washington.
It was an interesting ride down on that curvy dirt road.
Mine wasn't spraying that bad to get the tire messed up at least.

In fairness, it had been spooging back there for a while, so I knew it was going and had plenty of time to fix it, and I had been stalling on fixing it. Until it did that. : )

My vent tube was clear when I got engine oil drooling out of my clutch cable. There was just so much pressure from the bad crank seal that the tube filled with oil and still more needed to escape through the cable. It was spewing from the vent tube, also. Filled the primary case to the top.

I'm pretty sure my seal has gone bad also I guess I will order a new one and replace it. Anyone got the part number for the crankcase seal? It has fluid coming out the cable about midway up, so I would think the primary is filled up. I may get this old bike whipped back in shape sooner or later

Make sure you didn't fill the crankcase full of gas then pushed it in to your primary. This happen to me years ago and made a biiiigggggg mess. It blew out my seal and fulled the primary then blew the extra out my vent tube.

Interesting thought Lance, as these are carb bikes, a leaking float needle (which is pretty common) could do that.

To remove the crank seal, a couple of drywall screws work wonders. Just don't drill into the bearings if you drill holes to start them.

The seal is easy enough to check. Stand the bike upright, and pull the clutch inspection cover. If the fluid level in the primary is much above the bottom edge of the clutch basket, then the crank seal would be the issue.

If not, the fluid leakage is most likely a clutch cable issue.

Hope this helps, Dave

I pulled the clutch inspection plate and it's not full thank goodness. I got my ET sensor in and rerouted my IAT sensor from the filter to the intake tube, tucked under the bottom and out of the way. Got new gaskets coming for the intake tube they where in bad shape. Need a new cone filter mine is bend to hell and back plus I want it to be matte black. Plan on doing a catch can to get away from the blow bye going back into the engine. Got a lot of plans for the old bike just have to take my time.

Has anyone used the adjustable levers off ebay, it says they will fit the X1 but I really don't wanna buy them if they wont fit. I only need one but im not gonna give 50 bucks for one used if I can get a set for half the price. Or does someone know of levers that will cross refrence, that would be ok also. Thanks for everyones help I really do appreciate it.

Been covered several times on the forum.
There is a Kawi lever thats the same pm me I may have that info
The cheap levers do work you need to watch when installing them as their quality control is not the best you dont want it putting pressure on your master cylinder plunger if it does you need to file it a little ask me how I know!

Well I got a load of parts coming for the old sled. I will be posting some parts for sale in about a week. Got a set of XB wheels on the way, so all my old stuff will be up for grabs. Still need to concetrate on the running issues, but I'm sure I can get it lined out when the weather fairs up a bit.
