Recently got good deal on unused EBC brake rotor (MD719RS) for my '02 X1. The rotor uses the old-style countersunk screws. I couldn't easily find the old-style screw locally (part number AA0508.5CZ), but the bolt is apparently a 5/16"-18 x 3/4" flathead.

Ordered grade 8 steel bolts to that spec. They arrived and aren't totally flush in the countersunk rotor plate.

Does anyone know if it's designed to have a bit of play and not sit flush? Trying to figure out if it's safe... video link below.

Here's a video of the bolt in the rotor wiggling: https://vid.me/ULk3

Here's the type of bolt I got:

Here's another badwebber's photo of the stock bolts on old-style rotor. There seems to be a little shadow from it being raised, but I can't tell for sure:

I went and checked mine, also an EBC rotor that I just installed a couple weeks ago. It's definitely not flush with the rotor. I don't remember there really being any play in the bolts like yours, but I also didn't try to set the bolt in the rotor hole by itself. I just set the rotor on the wheel and tightened the bolts, so it's hard to say. Specifically, the bolt head sticks out .7mm or .03inch from the surface of the rotor. I assume the movement is from them not being the same exact taper. I'd just try bolting it up to your wheel and see how it looks and how much the bolts stick out.

Thanks for taking a look.

The video might be deceptive, since I am really trying to show the maximum movement possible while rotating the bolt. If I push it flat, the top sticks up a tiny bit and the bolt has just a slight amount of movement. Seems like this is close or same as a stock bolt.

Unless anyone else suggests otherwise, I'll assume it's going to work well.

I think this one is stainless. It's for $215 here: https://smile.amazon.com/EBC-Brakes-MD719RS-Brake- Rotor/dp/B000TFXE04?sa-no-redirect=1

I got an open-box deal on mine for $160

Al Lighton recommends the newer type of EBC rotor (same as this, but with the flat button-head style bolt). Seems like it's available for $185 (wow, wish I had seen that sooner): https://smile.amazon.com/EBC-Brakes-MD734RS-Brake- Rotor/dp/B0073DULA6?sa-no-redirect=1

I grabbed mine off of ebay, it was $185 shipped. Mine has tapered holes just like the stock rotor, I assume that means it's the older style? Not sure, I probably would've still gotten it just to save myself the $10 it would've cost to buy new bolts. I think if there's not too much play in the bolts, you'll be perfectly fine once it's bolted on. I wouldn't worry at all about the bolt sticking up past the face of rotor. The only thing that really matters is that the tapers are similar.

Nice and smooth compared to my old warped rotor. Only downside was that it was so clean, I thought it looked bad on my old dirty bike haha. That's a problem that'll resolve itself over time...
