Anyone have any experience with anything like these? I've never had a bike that was so misbehaved as my S1 on the rear stand. It walks all over the place and the stand always ends up at the very front of the swingarm. Sometimes I put a steel bar through the axle and lift it that way, but no help if I want to pull the rear wheel.

The pitbull idea seems beyond easy. I already have a drawer full of those threaded inserts, but guess I never considered them for heavy duty use. Pitbull typically overbuilds things and makes really durable stuff, so I'd be surprised if they were recommending something that wasn't gonna hold up. Very little information on their website, so I'm gonna email them and ask how thick a swingarm needs to be and how much weight they think would be safe on them. Only found 2 reviews on revzilla but they were both good.

The Graves adapters look pretty nice, use the same rivnuts, but uses two per side, obviously costs a little more.

Anyway, anyone here done anything like this, or found a good way to mount spools on the steel swingarms without having to pull the swingarm, take it to a welder, and get it repainted after?

Brother in buells.... thanks for the links, I've seen that bike before, always loved it. I'd love to have one like that just parked in the corner of the garage.

I read through a bit of the thread, but didn't see anything about 99cyclone/Joe mentioned. Was he the previous owner of the bike??

Those R&G mounts are something. They look like they want to bend just looking at them haha. I'd be very skeptical of them holding the weight of a bike too long.

I still feel like I the graves mounts look really nice. Don't feel like it'd be too hard to make something similar if I found a good chunk of steel or aluminum. Forgot I need to email pitbull to ask them about theirs!

Josh,

99cyclone / Joe still has the bike (it's parked in the living room)

It belonged to his father John.
Had a lot of nice conversations through email with John.
Time sure flies!

About the r&g mounts ,if you make some like these ,but from a bit thicker material ,they should work okay!


If you go for the graves mounts ,you can drill the holes on the underside of the swingarm and mount them with a bolt and a nut or a small but thick piece of iron with thread tapped holes.
should be doable when removing the axle carrier!

Hey Guys,
I don't log on here as often as I used to, but I'm glad I did today!

I just snapped this picture of the spools that are on the race bike. It's nothing more than a 5/16" bolt through the spool and into a threaded insert welded into the swingarm.

Awesome! Thank you so much for the picture. So never any issues with noticing the metal bending from the weight of the bike? I'd still like to see how much some aluminum would cost to make some mounts that fit like the Graves ones, if not, I'm very happy to see that yours work because I already have a bunch of threaded inserts here. That's a gorgeous bike too, always been one of my favorites.

I heard back from pitbull. They said the spool inserts were tested on a cbr f4 and an f4i, so they don't have any kind of weight rating, and they wouldn't recommend them on any other bikes than those two. Not the response I was expecting from a legitimate company haha.

Either way, the 6mm rivnuts I ordered came yesterday, just have to wait for the spools to show up.

The aluminum swingarms are the easy ones. I've seen a handful of guys on the forum drill right into their aluminum swingarms and tap the hole for threads, then they screw the spool right into it.

Got the spools and inserts in the mail. Everything went together pretty easily. The only things you need to look out for when you're drilling is the slot for the rear brake mount, and then keep in mind the clearance you'll need for the aluminum block that slides inside the swingarm that holds the axle. I lost a little bit of adjustment in mine, but figured the belts are always the same length, so I'm probably never going to need to slide the axle all the way up to the front of the slots anyway. I used an 8mm insert an slider, and the hole got drilled to 7/16ths.

The only thing I wasn't too crazy about is the lip on the threaded insert left about a 1mm gap between the spool and the swingarm.

I didn't notice it flexing in the slightest when I put the bike up on the stand, but I knew I'd feel better with the whole surface of the spool against the swingarm to spread out the weight. I just went and got a thin washer, drilled the hole out just big enough to fit around the insert and put the spool back on.

I'll have to post back after a few months and I'm sure that it's a good permanent solution. So far I'm happy though.

They were even nice enough to stamp Rizoma on there, considering they're a set of $5 spools from china haha. I'm half tempted to pull them off and rough them up with some sandpaper though. they're pretty shiny, and really stand out to me considering how worn and dirty everything else on the bike is haha.

Update to an old thread. I know it's archived but when I first planned on installing spools I really couldn't find much information online about it, so I wanted to put this in here so at least it'll be there when someone searches in the future.

I installed those 6mm spools in my steel swingarm and they worked great. I swapped to an aluminum swingarm over winter and have big time been missing the spools. I just finished installing some in the new swingarm today. Much easier on the aluminum swingarm. I drilled a 17/64 hole and tapped it for a 8mmx1.25 bolt and screwed in the spools(double check yours, they sell them with 6mm/8mm/10mm bolts so yours might be different).

Things to consider, make sure you don't try to mount it too close to the axle adjuster bolt. That goes straight into the swingarm and would obviously give you problems if you drilled into it. Make sure you check the placement on the left side so it's not in the way of your sidestand. Otherwise it was all very simple.
