That is an excellent example of one of Marty Brown's M2 Cyclones. It was a REALLY run project that I will have to tell you all about someday . . . including tales of Abe being precisely correct about where the bike would break in half were an errant owner to take it off a major jump. . . .Shame that the Showa folks, who had come to see America and Buell that day, happened to be there to witness what they surely thought was a bunch of insane Americans as Marty took the M2 about 27 feet over folks' head at the old AMC Pacer test facility. Funnier yet . . . he was wearing one of the new helmets we were working a branding deal with and Erik's first question was . . when called . . ."did he damage the helmet?" The most wonderful thing about the M2 Cyclone was the S1 While Lightning. The S1WL got so much attention that we were able to get away with almost anything in terms of testing, development and dialing the M2 in to become what I . . as long time readers will recall, . . . termed "possibly the best motorcycle ever built". The M2 was competent in terms of power . . it had plenty for any of us civilians . . it handled on par with the world's best motorcycles and it was at simple as a common rock. The M2, like the 1965 Ford Mustang, ran if it had fuel, compression and spark. There is no "dongle" attachment. It's elegant in terms of design, comfy on long journeys and can, with a few bucks and hours, become damn near anything an owner could want. There are times . . I wonder if EBR . . . in a quest for commercial viability . . wouldn't be well served to build something this simple and sell them, as fast as dealers could stock them, for about $8,000. The perfect motorcycle? That's a matter of opinion . . . but I could make a credible debate for this bike in any debate. Court | ||

I just knew it was the right thing to do.Called Barber they asked for some pictures and they did not have one in their collection.Brian from the museum was very helpful.Yes I could have sold it and it more than likely would have been chopped, as some might know I have one for sale on this site and craigs list.The only interest from craigs list wanted to chop the hell out of it.The one I donated only had 3000 miles on it | ||

I think it's so cool that the Barber Museum has it. They are the gold standard of preserving motorcycles. I recall when Ultan was marshaling all the motorcycles for The Art of The Guggenheim . . doubtless the most amazing motorcycles to ever occupy a common space . . and how cool it was when we found something this amazing and well documented. I hope the Barber folks know what they have. If not, let me know and I'll do a "living history" of 5 or 6 of the project engineers and build the history of their collective M2 Cyclone experience. It was, and remains, an amazing testament to Erik Buell's genius. | ||

That is the appeal of an M2. Even the XB's do a pretty good job of keeping technology as a servant instead of a master. I spent 12 hours doing a 5 hour job replacing isolators on the Mini Cooper S this weekend, which included exploding then repairing my vise. Simplicity is appealing to me today. | ||

Speaking of Marty Brown's M2 Cyclones, here's a pic I saved a while back via the internet wayback machine from buell.com MANY years back - and stumbled upon tonight.  That's definitely Marty's helmet on the M2 rider (NOT the helmet the question was asked about).
