Have you checked for power to the coil? Did you remove the plug and check for spark? I know it sounds simple but I HAVE TO ASK.

Its becoming brutally hot here this week with tropical humidity and I work in a non air conditioned warehouse needless to say not spending time in the garage after work.
But I will check for spark first, how do I check for power at the coil?

Ok so had a chance to take a look. But a little back story
This is all 96 S1 electronics. I have installead all motogadget parts and controls installed all new wiring and eliminated the clutch and kickstand interlock circuit.

I am not getting any spark and I get no light at the coil when putting a rest light on the terminals and a ground.
I have used two diffrent ingnition boxes so thats not the issue.

So the white with black strip wire and the pink wire come from the ecm to the coil pretty simple what am i missing?

I think the VOES does what old distributors did, that is, advance the timing.

During startup, I would think that your ignition should have little or no advance.

Another thought. Have you checked your CPS? That is your crank position sensor located just above your exhaust collector. Two rivets hold the outside cap in place. You will have to drill out the rivets to access the CPS. From what Harleyelf says, if it's bad it will smell burnt.

S1: Unfortunately, you're 100% correct. There's likely nothing actually wrong with your motorcycle except for the wiring. Check for grounds everywhere there shouldn't be at the ECM, coil and crank position sensor.

Good luck!

Ken, your meaning the electronic ignition box, not an ecm. correct-

looking at the wiring diagram of the S1... what wire is feeding power to the electronic ignition box?

I see a Pink and White/Black wire feeding the coil.

Purpony, the pink wire is directly from the ICM. It sends the firing signal to the coil and also to the tachometer if one exists.

The w/blk wire, I believe should be 12V when the key is turned on. It is directly wired to the right handle bar switch.

Check for 12V at the coil on this wire.

ok- that makes sense. Thanks Drawkward-- I see How the W/BK is wired now. Hard looking at a blown up wiring diagram on a small laptop screen-

Ken- Do you have the W/BK wire hooked to the AUX out on the M-Unit? Running to Both the ICM and the Coil? When you activate the M-lock that will power on the system.

On my FI bike I have the Grey wire running from the AUX out on the M-Unit which feeds both my ECM and Coil.... Then the signal wire from the ECM to the coil.

Right. The FI bike is different in that regard obviously. The coil is a dumb ignition part...it only knows voltage and when it should fire. And if either of those wires aren't hooked up properly the coil won't fire.

That pink wire on my bike was grounding on the frame (I have "upgraded wiring too") when the bike got hot. I was totally baffled until I started to check for rubbing issues and found it.

Ok so since I dont have handlebar controls currently the black wire goes only from coul to ICM. So I should run it also to the aux or ignition of the m unit?

Yes- to the AUX... That is the power source out of the M-unit

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, the black wire needs a switched 12v. The aux from that M unit should function as such.
