Hey brothers, ok, got the new used force exhaust on, new used shock and new used seat. Tried to clean the air "injection" and cleaned up the motor. Started the bike and red v-motor stayed on, turned off and checked oil, seemed to be ok, added a little anyway, started back up and light stayed on. Gave it a little throttle and cuts out, then wouldn't idle, started back up, decided I'd better get some help... going to check the plugs, wires, maybe O2 loose and see if I can find problem... any thoughts on this ?

Did you tune it when you installed the force? You will need to adjust the ecm I would think

Usually have to do a tps reset after changing exhaust. Or it will not hold idle when you give it gas like you said. And you have to adjust the tune as S1 said.

Thanks for replies, after the post, I looked at the bike again and checked the plugs and wires, cleaned the racing ECM connections, looked under the tank and tied up loose wires, checked the air force and saw the connectors to the heads and did see that the connections that go into the heads were loose, not sure if they are suppose to be tight and they appear to have threads, as far as the Force, we bought it with the exhaust and on our third set. The reset was never done, suppose I could ask how that's done. One more question, saw a plug by the neck and saw a connector for testing I'm guessing. After all this, started back up, no light and took down the road, seemed to be ok now. But want to do the reset.

Brothers, one more thing, finally cleaning the cone filter, appears to be a k&n filter, so I'm soaking it overnight in water and Dawn. Did notice that while at idle, when I gave it gas and I could see the cover being sucked in, so that is probably one of the problems.

TPS reset is not necessary when changing exhaust. The exhaust has nothing to do with the voltage at the TPS that the ECM has been told is zero throttle angle. You will need to update your fuel map if you've gone from stock to aftermarket though. Stock is already lean, adding a pipe will make it more so. I'm not saying your bike doesn't need a TPS reset, but it isn't because you changed the exhaust.

Most exhaust will tell you not changing the tune and adding a pipe can cause problems and will void some warranties. And when you change the exhaust and the ECM (tune) you should do a tps reset. I changed the ecm and exhaust on my1125CR bike would start and idle but the minute you gave it gas it would die. Spoke to IDS the said to do a TPS reset and it resolved the problem.

If check engine light is on you most likely disconnected a sensor when cleaning and need to go back and make sure all are connected properly-- assuming the Force has a bung for O2 sensor?

Ok, so by reading the link(s), it would seem to me that a reset would be a bit time consuming as I'd need to pull off the unit and perform the voltage testing. Another question, the ECMSpy, is that something I can find and I'd guess hooks up to the plug up front ?

Zhen13 needed to reset his because he replaced the ECU; not because he replaced the pipes.

A TPS reset is just telling the computer:
This is open
This is closed
It stores these two voltage levels as numbers and extrapolates all of the settings in between.

2008 and up bikes can be reset without connecting up anything to the bike but older ones like an X1 need a computer connected to the ECU to do the deed.

Ok. I really appreciate all the help. So now, ECMSpyware, where can I get it. The racing ECM on the bike has been on it since last year. It idles ok and runs around 85 at 4000 rpm. Seems to be ok. Do want to learn as much as I can. Had a 2000 softail Springer that I gave to my youngest son. My other son bought the '99 X-1 and I didn't ride it for about a year. Then I decided to... didn't realize how fun it was going 90 mph. Never went back to the chopper. Now my son has a '97 S-1 Lightning and, again want to learn as much as I can on it. I did find out that my 55 year old rear end can't handle the stock seat. Once I deliver the X-1, this will be my daily. I'll be looking for a gel seat though. Sorry about the preaching...

Ok, so I thought all was good... wrong. Took the bike out for final inspection and light was blinking off and on. Stopped to fuel up, took off and got it up to around 4000 in second to gear up, it started to cut out like it was shorting out or choking out, light comes back on and it catches. Took out on freeway and it does almost the same thing. Next step is new plugs and wires, recheck where I tired some wires up under the tank. Its all good though...

make sure the temp sensor is not reporting a wobbly temp. Needs to be stable, it will mess with everything and y ou cant tps a reset a bike that has a half ass defective temp sensor. intake gaskets are a must. My X1 is one of the best around. Screams down the freeway no problem. Get Baldwin Saddles to make you a seat. He rides a Buell too.

Unknown history of any bike I buy, when running poorly, is to change out the O2 sensor. Usually followed by an engine temp. sensor or ETS as it is known.

A lot of the engine/transmission parts can still be sourced from HD as our Buell's have a hopped up Sportster engine.

Good day to all the Buell family, ok, installed a "new" used 02 sensor, rechecked all the connections with cleaning and die electric grease, now I bought a "new" used ETS and went to install, but noticed some sort of rubber type material on both the old and new one, so what do i do to clean and use before I install ? Am hoping after all this, the bike is running back to normal, thanks to all as usual.

So right now I'm going to download ECMSPY and start from there. Am also going to look at the sensor inside the air cleaner. Did read up on the X-1 files and will attempt to get it right. So I put it aside for now and started the '97 S-1 and cleaned it a bit. Has a cone filter, guessing it will need some sort of K and N coating. Been a little stressful, but it's all worth it.

Jahwarrior still wont tell us what engine code the bike is giving. It may never run right again. The blinking red light will give you the code but you need the secret code reader table in the service manual to decipher..

Ok, back at it, oiled the filter, took for a ride, ran ok for a couple of miles, then red light comes on, no blinking. Now I'm looking at, I think, the ETS... here's a pic...

That is the IAT - the intake air sensor. The ETS - engine temperature sensor is located on the rear head; either in the 'chimney' formed by the rocker box or near the rear plug, IIRC.

As Nate said, just read the code(s) and let us know what they are. Don't hesitate to ge the factory service manual . . .

Ok, going to try and find these codes. I'm guessing it's like codes on a car, plugging in a ODB. I'm probably wrong, not trying to sound stupid. I do have a downloaded copy of the manual. I'll be checking it. Thanks for the help and comments.

Do a search on ECMSpy and read up. It'll be the best tool for your bike if you plan to keep your X1.

I ended getting some help from Steveford. PM'ed him and he was able to help me get a cable with a program. Loaded and hooked up the X-1, three codes came up: short in the fuel filter line, short in the temp sensor in the air cleaner and 02 running rich. After I cleared the codes, Steveford "walked" me thru the details and I then took for a ride and its at 99%. I say 99, only because I need to hook back up while running and set the rest of it up. I'd have to say, if you don't have the ECMSPY and the cable, a person might have problems getting the bike to run right. Many thanks to Steveford and the rest of you.

Once these bikes are warmed up and the O2 sensor is in the loop these bikes should run perfectly.

Had mine since 1000 miles. Air temp sensor still original. Close care needs to be taken for the Timing sensor, head tempo sensor. TPS sensor. Intake seals every two years abouts. Vtwin 2050 full syn oil. Plus you need to go full race kit if warranted. KN filter should be followed with a race muffler and new race ecm. Mine flys on the highway 80-100 mph on a regular basis. This Black Betty is always ready the bitch just keeps on screaming! Really pushing it, new cruiser again soon. Buell stays.
