Can anyone help with the correct size bolt?
I found one missing after it was leaking oil. Strange that I can see all the way into the tank.

BOLT, 5/16-18x7/8, hex hd., zinc

^ is what the parts book says.

Strange that I can see all the way into the tank.

That is indeed strange as the tank was not open in that area. There was a pocket feature molded into the tank for the wellnut to sit and the bolt to go in. If I recall, they were fairly deep on the X1 tank. I'd stick a zip tie down that hole and pull it out to truly know if your tank is open in that area.

You know what must have happened?
I'll bet someone used a bolt that was too long and it broke its way in to the tank.

There isn't a good way to fix that if I'm right.
You may have to get a "new" one from ebay.

Thanks 1313 I tried a zip tie to gauge the depth. It goes about an inch. There is oil in there. I'll look for a replacement in the meantime and order the correct bolt since I have to order a new header shoe for the support.

Nate not sure hope not. The threads look ok. I'm wondering if it was always like that now or if it was taken off when I had my rear belt replaced at the dealership.
Probably was always like that it's just weird how it's missing.
It did always have oil from that side of the oil tank and I could see it from the cut out in the rear aluminum fairing. I just though it was from the breather I installed.

It's been hot lately and it's been leaking a lot more oil when parked after riding. I've been keeping a eye on the oil and found it.

Did the zip tie hit bottom? If so its not punched through if not then it is an issue and will need replaced. If you did find bottom then there is oil most likely weeping out your fill cap possibly over filled? My S1 did some of that and it annoyed the hell out of me so I went through on the next oil change and cleaned, lubed, tightened everything and made sure not to over fill and issue was fixed.

Yeah I over filled a couple times for sure. Noticed the fill cap wasn't all the way on lately to (hope this is why there is more oil leak than before). My primary oil is leaking from the shifter arm and the drain plug. I need to fix that next.
Zip tie goes about 1" and stops for oil res.

I got a bolt and crush washer from lowes this morning and put it in. It's a bit shorter than the original spec. I still kinda want to get the right bolt because there's engineering in a bolt and it's probably stronger.. It will be fine for now.

Just an update..

I was cleaning the oil that was everywhere and found the missing bolt under the ecm loom. The washer is gone but I was able to put the right bolt back.
Seriously strange, I guess there's enough room under the seat for it to walk out.

I have also found the top of my tranny to collect stuff for a surprising amount of time.
Of course, it's filthy so stuff sticks : )

Most notable in my mind was I lost a nut off of the rear header and replaced it from one in a hardware store. Happened in Memphis, TN. I finished my roadtrip and went home.

Years later, at about 40,000 miles or more even, the nut was found right there on top of the tranny.

Strange I guess it's good to have a good keychain. I just use the plastic Harley emblem I got from the dealer when I got my belt changed.

I was looking at a softail slim. Also looked at a r9t. I'm thinking about trading in my old bmw for the r9t first and maybe finding a used fls with 110 later on.
