Author Message   Roderick Posted on Monday, June 20, 2016 - 01:29 am:        In Jun 2015, the clutch cable in my S1 broke at the lever end. I ordered a Barnett cable from American Sport Bike and it worked great. Consistent and smooth operation. Past couple of weeks, occasionally in engaging first gear from standing still, the bike would go, but then there would be lurch, as if first gear finally fully engaged. I could not duplicate the behavior at will but I kinda sorta suspect it had to be clutch related. Once moving, I had no problems going up/down the gears. Tonight, the clutch cable broke at the lever end. I thought that the Barnett cable would last more than a yr. Has anyone experienced a clutch cable life this short -- one yr ? Roderick   Oopezoo Posted on Monday, June 20, 2016 - 07:15 am:        Only time I've had a premature failure of a clutch cable on any bike was when I forgot to put a dab of grease the ferrule when installing it. I'd check your controls for any worn spots that it might be catching or rubbing on. If the cable is dragging on anything, it won't take long for it to pop.   Ratbuell Posted on Monday, June 20, 2016 - 11:29 am:        +1 on lube. Have to lube the cable itself but also the ferrule so it slides in the lever. Twisting back and forth causes failure.   Roderick Posted on Monday, June 20, 2016 - 09:45 pm:        Lube ? I thought the Barnett cable I had did not require lube, at best, some grease at the lever end, which I did. Anyway, I ordered another of the same and will watch for symptoms during the next yr. Roderick   Ratbuell Posted on Monday, June 20, 2016 - 10:33 pm:        Only teflon-lined cables are lube-free...and frankly, I'd rather keep a jar of dri-slide handy than go with teflon. I need to look for some graphite spray lube.   89rs1200 Posted on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 - 01:11 am:        I agree, dry lube is the way to go. I have not broken a lubricated S3 clutch cable in 100,000 miles, but I have had to replace the clutch bearing, PN 8885, which runs under the clutch ramps. Felt just like a clutch cable going. Scratchy with clutch lever moving back with each successive pull till it quite working.
