I am new to the Buell /Harley brand. Have this '96 S2-T that I want to know how to tell what cams are actually in this bike. I want to mainly drag race it, but not wanting to make it all out drag race. Suggestions for a set of cams that will work good in 1/4 but not kill the streetability for just a "casual" ride to bike night now and then. Any elp would be greatly appreciated. I did win Open street class a couple months ago, so just trying to get a bit more out of it while also doing some things to let it launch harder.

I'm running a set of Andrews N4's in my 96 S2 and I really like them a lot. Similar progressive power curve as the stock sportster cams, but noticeably more power. Low end torque is still good too. I have T-storm heads and pistons, 42 mm mikuni pumper, and a SE ignition box on my bike, and the combo is really easy to ride on the street.

I like my s.e. 536's work best with some porting, mikuni carb and 1250 kit, just a touring bike that will flip in 1st or 2ed😉

I have to agree with Bluesboy, I just overhauled my S2 after 80,000 miles she was getting tired so I put in the 536 cams, 10-1 wiseco pistons, Ported S1 heads along with a set of S1 flywheels and this thing is a tractor now pulls well from 2000 rpm and will rev well beyond where it would before due to the better breathing heads

I have a 1250 kit for sale in the classifieds with SE536 cams and ported thunderstorm heads. Will make a good deal on it.

The stock motor is only 9:1 compression, so higher overlap cams drop out the bottom end grunt a bit when no other work is done. Best to pair cams with higher compression and better heads and/or porting. Swap in some XB or 04-up XL1200 heads on top of the stock pistons and you'll bump the compression to ~9.8:1 (you will need a different front motor mount), and some .536 or NRHS CAT3 cams, and rejet the carb, and you can make 15-20 more horsepower than stock.

Are there any markings to look for to see if cams are stock? Not sure of the history of engine. Was told it was not "stock" though. I have replaced both head gaskets a while back, and while I have no clue what was in there, to me it seemed to have never been apart before. If it was an old Z1 / Kz Kawasaki, I'd know what I was looking at. So, I am assuming all is stock, and because of that, I would like to just bump it up a bit without going as far as pistons /heads. At least for right now. And the Mikuni is gone, it has an S&S in its place, The exhaust has at least a Kerker muffler, maybe full exhaust.

I have a set of low mileage stock cams if anyone wants them. I installed X1 cams with lightning heads and a lightened balanced X1 crank from team elves days. It works for me.
