Hello,
I have a question concerning my 01 M2L Cyclone. I noticed its leaking oil about half way up the rear jug.
I tried to do a compression test on her, but didn't have a screw in type tester. I was however able to get 3 test out of the back cylinder that was well over 120 psi's like the manual calls for.I had a hard time getting my tester in the right place on the front jug to get a good reading.
Here are a couple pictures of my jug and the tester I used with the numbers I got.
I'm not sure where to go from here.
Thanks.

I'd like to add that both my spark plugs look about the same , neither of them are oil fouled...

For the oil spot ,clean it as good as possible and keep an eye on it.

If it comes back I think you'll be doing some head and base gaskets.

The head gasket ring in still good that's why the cylinder pressure is still up. That area is the return port coming down from the rocker box, the o-ring is starting to leak. Plan on doing your head and brace gaskets, it's not going to get better.

Thank you all very much.
I'm going to go ahead and start taking her apart tomorrow.

I'm wondering if this might be a good time to look into finding some XB heads to get rid them umbrella valves?
I'm not sure if they are still available or not.

Are you thinking heads or rocker boxes?

I'm not sure honestly, I just remember reading something about that years ago when I 1st got my bike and I'd like to try and improve it as much as my finances will allow (which are rather limited) while I'm in there.
If I remember right the pistons and jugs and all that are an improvement, but I most just want to get rid of the umbrella valves.

The umbrella valves are in the rocker boxes. All the parts are still available at this time.

Awesome, so are the umbrella valves worth getting rid of far as the expense of new rocker boxes goes?
Seems I remember the motor breathes better without them which seems like a good thing to me.

I installed them on the S2 about 5 years ago and never had any leaking issues. The main reason I did it was to plug the breather bolts that go into the head through the carb bracket. I linked both the pcv lines together then dumped them into a catch can then vented out the tail of the bodywork.

That sounds great.
I just checked American Sport Bike for the XB rocker boxes and they didn't have any or I didnt search right one..
I see they are going out of business real soon.
I've still got the bread box on my M2 and its always getting full of oil. I'm not sure at this point I want to get rid of the bread box or not since I've gone accustomed to it now. At 1st I hated the thing..lol
I really appreciate your insight into this project. Thank You!

Thats not real bad, but I'm not sure I could swing all that plus what I need to fix what is wrong with her.
I have replaced the top end paper gaskets with the rubber coated metal gaskets not long after I got the bike back around 09 I think it was. I haven't seen them since I put them in there so I'm not sure if they'd still be good or not.
Thats 95 bucks right there.

Once they been squished they can't be squished again and except them to seal. The gasket kit list is for a complete top end kit.

If you are getting a lot of oil pukage into the air cleaner, check your oil level. It seems every Buell engine likes the oil level in a certain spot that is a lot less than the full mark. I think most folks have less oil puking by filling the oil tank to only between just touching the dip stick to not more than 1/4 inch from the bottom. I think you can find a lot of posts about that if you search. I have had good luck with oil levels just touching the bottom of the dip stick.

There is a guy here who might have some used.
I bought some from him.
I have his email, but can't remember his name on the board.
PM me if you want his email address.

That looks like a pretty slow leak at this point.

Lance,

What is this part?

17598-97yc lower rocker box $67 x2

I thought I had read all the articles about converting to XB rockers, but never saw that part mentioned.

If your lowers are flat you will not need the lowers. After you get them off you'll need to place them on a true flat surface ( granite or glass will work) and confirm. So I didn't mention it before.

I was curious about doing this conversion to the XB covers but wanting to keep my air box.
Would I still be able to attach it like its always been or will I have to eliminate it?
Thanks.

You can still keep the factory air box, just have to replace the breather bolts with solid bolts instead. I replaced base and head gaskets on my S1, but never had a blow by issue, so I reinstalled it back factory regarding the rocker covers using Cometic gaskets and still have never had any issues. I did do the XB rocker box conversion on my S3 to try to reduce some oil venting, it may have helped slightly.

Thank you, I appreciate that information.
I'm a little slow getting my head wrapped around this project, but it is starting to come into focus for me, thanks to all of you guys who have been down this road.

I wish I'd done this back when I replaced the paper gaskets for the metal ones. I'm not sure it'd been any cheaper or not then, but at least it'd be water under the bridge now.
