S1W with a CV40 carb: The throttle plate would not fully open. As in, it would not be at 180 degrees before the throttle shaft could no longer move. I concluded that the accelerator pump linkage was preventing it. So, I removed it. I know the accelerator pump is not needed, but I thought this was more of a fuel savings/practice in minimalism. I haven't seen anything about it purposefully stopping the plate movement. Is this by design? Or have a just "product improved" my carb? Here is a before and after:

The accelerator pump shaft if installed correctly will not keep the throttle from opening all the way. When the pump quits working on a bike they will tend to have a flat spot when accelerating at the start. In all the years in the HD business we've left them in for better results. |

I do agree with 651. Something must be amiss with the installation. I just pulled out a couple spare carbs I have as spares and none of them exhibit the problem you are experiencing. And yes they all have the acceleration pump installed. I also noticed neither pictures you show have the float bowl installed. (Message edited by Buell_Bert on February 07, 2016) |

Ya, I had it all taken apart cleaning it. Hmm, perhaps it was something goofy with mine. I'm going to leave it off for now, but if I experience that flat spot I'll put it back on and figure out what was going on. |

Watch your head temperature come summer. Too-lean running at take-off can cause damage; accelerator pumps are a vital part of the system. |

They also help for starting especially if the bike sits any length of time. |
