Swapping out the Detent Plate on my S1W with the new and improved one. Got in there and the old one looks like this:









Any ideas on how that happened and other things to look for? I also noticed the shifting shaft has a little bit of play. I assume that's normal, but don't really know...

I might make a video of the primary in case there is something obvious I'm missing in there. If any one is interested in checking it out? Thanks.

Looks to me like at some point the pins behind the detent plate started to work their way out (pretty common) and the plate made some contact against the back of the primary/clutch basket.

Do you know the history of the bike?

It almost looks like it was ejected from the shaft at some point in the past, and went banging around the primary getting a little chewed up, and then the bike was repaired.

I'd have probably filed it and sanded it a little better before reusing it, but I would have probably reused it also if that had happened to me and that plate was in that OK of shape.

I've seen the detent plate pop off before also. For the $10 or less for the plate and the clip replace them.

Anyone know the size of the E Clip? Or should I just take my old one to ACE and get a replacement? The HD dealer wants $1.70 each. EACH. The very thought offended me. When markups get into quadruple digits, I have to look around on principle. Unless these E Clips were designed by NASA, I don't see the harm.

This isn't just an e-clip, it also keep tension on the detent. Use the HD retainer or other problem my start up. I just looked up the cost of the part and at $1.70 that isn't marked up much, $.71 is all.

The pins work their way out forcing the detent plate to rub on the starter gear on the clutch housing.
Type "detent plate fix" in search and see just how common this problem is.

Ps. notice the Jramsey post.
Grind the clip retaining section off and tap a thread for a small button head screw. Use a cobalt drill and tap for a small button head screw.
And you don't have to take your gearbox apart. Simply use a piece of cardboard with the required section exposed through a hole to keep metal waste away from the gears..

The shift shafts has play whenever the primary housing is removed because there is nothing supporting one side. Buy new shift shaft seal. Check torque on starter bolts. Examine stator leads very close as the insulation can get brittle, flake off and cause A/C to ground out. Apply hi-temp gasket sealer around the stator rubber grommet where it exits the primary.

You're right 651Lance, it's not "just" an e-clip. It does have a curve to keep tension and the large outer diameter aids in that. Not something you can just pick up. I got a replacement from the dealer. Worth the price knowing it's not a stock shelf item.

While the screw solution sounds amazing, I don't have access to the tools to do it. I'll apply some loctite to the pins and make sure they're tapped in gently with a punch. If I can get two e-clips in I'll do that too.

Thanks Jim2 for the torque on the bolts tip. I'll make sure to do that. I carefully checked those known issues and everything "looks" good, but I'll put a wrench to the bolts. I know my engine sprocket is the old one, but it looks good and I don't have money for a new one.

Thanks again for all the help guys! Sorry if my post are repeats from issues of old. I have tried searching the knowledge base, etc. but with more than 10 years of post to sift through, it's daunting to try and search them all. PLUS, got to keep the forums active and give you guys something to do! Right!? ;]
