Anyone have comprehensive instructions on how to remove my S1W swingarm and install an X1 swingarm? it's late and I'm tired but it looks like I have to unbolt the motor and support it? Am I missing something? Hope so. All help appreciated |

look in the knowledge vault you can download a 97 S1 manual it will give you all the info like torque ratings etc. What I and many have done is use a ratchet strap around the rear frame and over a rafter of engine hoist just put enough tension on it to hold the frame in position. Remove shock, brace / block up engine remove rear wheel etc remove rear Iso Bolts remove swing arm bolt swing arm will come out follow instructions to reinstall with correct torque ratings etc. Couple things to think of Did you get the Axle with the new swing arm they are different? Do you have new Iso bolts not supposed to reuse those? do you have the axle tensioners for the new swing arm? Do you have Anti seaze? |

no you aren't missing something. Yes, you will have to support the motor. I've had an M2 so I'm not positive on shock lengths, swing arm widths, etc. but to remove and reinstall a swing arm… You will need to support the frame (I always flipped the rider pegs over and used jack stands), then block up the motor. Remove rear wheel. remove rear brake and line from swing arm. disconnect heim link from swing arm mount block. There may also be a ground strap to disconnect from the swingarm side. Disconnect shock from swingarm. Remove the pulley support brace (goes from the motor to the swingarm mount block.) Remove the large allen head bolts at the frame to swingarm pivot. At this point you should be able to lift the frame slightly from the swing arm mount - don't do it too much as the other heim links are still connected along with other stuff. Loosen and remove 4 bolts from swingarm block to motor. It should then just fall down. Reverse the procedure to reinstall, taking care not to flex the frame too much when reinstalling it "over" the swingarm mount. It would also be a good time to replace the swingarm isolators and bolts with new. You may need to remove the belt guard, battery, etc. to make this easier. I'm doing this all from memory but that info should get you well on your way. |
