Sure, it could be in the M2 forum...but it's basically an old-school question.

01 M2L. Low miles (5k I think). Runs great, jetted great, race exhaust, race ignition, race hamcan. Bypassed sidestand switch.

Sometimes...it'll crank fine (like this afternoon, when I had to PUSH it up a hill to get it out of the garage and into the workshop) but won't start. Sometimes, it cranks exactly the same, but STARTS (like tonight, after I'd had it on the battery tender for about six hours).

Stumped.

Thoughts? Ideas? Do I chase coil? Wires? Cam sensor? Grrrr.....

I had a bad agm battery once that did the same thing.

Had it load tested and it failed, seems it probably had a screwed up cell that would sometimes be fine and other times it wouldn't allow a strong enough discharge.

Funny thing was the voltage and amps were always fine.

If it cranks but never fires, I'd be looking at cam sensor and coil. Do you have access to an oscilloscope? Or feel willing to pony up $75 for a cheap one?

Check for corrosion on the wire harness plug by the neck. I had an issue like this on mine I sprayed it with electrical spray cleaner / sealer and it fix my issue.

Sure sounds electrical. When it's not starting, check to see whether you have spark. Work back from there.

Don't forget to go through your fusebox. A little corrosion there will cause some strangeness.

Also pull the spark plug leads and look under the boots. My S1 was corroded like crazy under there but some emery cloth and dielectric grease got me going again.

Turn ignition on, wait for ecm light to go out (ecm is now calibrated to start mode), then without touching the throttle at all, hit the starter button.
If it does not fire, wait for light to go out again and do it again.

you should not have to use the throttle at all to start the bike.

Could the sidestand bypass switch could be intermittent, sometimes not bypassing? Not sure what the symptom would be..

Alfau - it's an M2. Carbureted. No ecm, no wait to start light.

Sidestand switch is cut off and wires twisted.

I'll troubleshoot this weekend. Rode the S1W today after finally fixing rockerbox leaks and a stuck carb float. Damn, that bike is a hooligan

Rat - my M2 had corrosion in the kill switch... obviously these gremlins are a pain to chase.... good luck with it.

The grounding strap on your swing arm has a washer between the frame that will rust.
