Would anyone know what the weight differential is between the Marchesini and PM rims?
My mutated S2 keeps eating speedo drives by busting the drive tang off with the Marchesini rim.

Can't see what the wheel weight has to do with it. If the drive is trying to rotate with the wheel, it could be that you're missing a spacer, or one of them is squished a bit, and your wheel and speedo gear are rubbing, eventually breaking that tab. Just a thought.

I know that weight doesn't have anything to do with the speedo drives being eaten, I was asking more for unsprung weight. The bike is heavy enough as it is.
The speedo drive is staying put, the tang just keeps busting off.
I put PM spacers in the Marchesini rim and they're a bit thicker but that still didn't solve the problem. It's a puzzler.
At any rate, has anyone ever weighed the different rims?

The Marchesinis are a few ounces lighter than the castalloys. The PMs are the heavier bunch, IIRC about 1/2# more up front and 1# rear. There was a picture posted years ago with the info, but who knows where it is now.

Is the tong being seated all the way into the notch? I've seen instances where it was not sitting fully inside, and the torsional force would break it. I also wonder if the notch is walleyed out larger and the start/stop tapping is contributing to the premature breaking.

Make sure drive-unit is smooth action as stated above and greased + cable + correct Routing+no burrs in cable-housing greased And speedo is not binding.Wheels mount the exact same way Have both styles.

My guess is the notch is allowing too much slop so it's either JB Weld to the rescue or PM wheels for the Purple Nurple.
This bike has been fighting me over little crap for the past two years. It's bigger but I'm meaner and have opposable thumbs!
P.S.
I love that video of the guy on the bike. I take it he works for UPS and is express delivering a package marked FRAGILE?

PS: Slop is Normal.Look For Binding and Dry Grease In cable burs in housing, drive unit.Always grease it up cable,drive gear.

I think I found the problem.
One of the wheel bearings must have been seated slightly off center and it was causing the speedo drive plate to rotate just a little bit eccentric. That caused the locating hole to get worn weird and then the tang would eventually snap off.
I fixed the hole, reseated the bearings and so far, so good.

What wheel did the M2 2000 come stock with?

also i always thought PM would be lighter, i would no pay extra to put heavier wheels on a bike. how do others feel on this?

They came with castalloy with pm as a stock option.

The Castalloys were sometimes tough to get. Being foreign made parts they were 8 weeks "on the water" so it took some planning,

When Castalloy got into financial difficulties HD stepped in.

in 2013 Australian $ was up with US $ & wages are high, so would not be cheap. surprised the Buell cast wheel came from South Australia. i knew HD wheels did but they are always heavy. like anything HD does, they just keep getting heavier. but the people that ride HD don't seem to think about weight at all.
a lighter wheel excellerates quicker than a heavy wheel.
i always thought the Buell cast wheel was euro. but being Australian they would not be that light, as i've not seen light wheels made mass production here. i've seen light wheels made in Australia just not mass production.
but happy with my wheels.
just puzzled that the PM wheel was not lighter as i remember friends got racing wheels ( not for highway use ) PM wheels that looked just like what Buell offered.
Thanks for info, i will look for lighter wheels as want performance. from my tuber too easy buying a new bike!

PM makes all kinds of wheels and made other wheel options for Buells as well. The Buell optioanl PM wheels are commonly called Chicanes but they are not the same as the Chicanes direct from PM. The Buell version, made by PM, has slanted spokes, whereas the aftermarket ones available direct from PM and their distributors have straight spokes. The straight spoke Chicanes were extremely popular in the Harley drag racing scene and are likely the wheels you are thinking of. I wouldn't be surprised if they are lighter than the Buell option variant as well, because the straighter spoke would have less material.

Thanks Ross, the ones my friend has are on a Top Fuell. front wheel looks like what you posted but rear wheel not PM
another friend had the very light wheels on an FXR , i lifted them without tire or disc fitted and they where very light.
i'm told PM no longer make them everything i see from PM like brakes and so on are more for show i would not use anything they make myself. i like Brembo Brakes would like carbon wheels.
