Ok so I have been wondering which cleaner works best? I have used the factory carbon fiber race air cleaner , forcewinder / racewinder , and a kuryakyn. Any other ideas.

I seem to like the factory carbon fiber race setup from what I have used but like the carbon fiber racewinder setup that I had on my old 1996 S1 I had.

They all filter, the air coming in, but I think the race carbon is hard to beat as it looks to have more air space inside. But the most important thing is to have the carb jetted right & if it's The stock cv have the right needle as well as the right jets.
When I drag raced I just used the backing plate & no air filter at all. I had fast trap speeds , I also use s&s manifold seemed to flow better.
But depends what you use you bike for.

Bartel's air cleaner is a nice option but very hard to find.

I modified one of these and put it on my first S2 at one time.

I have a few Frontier Services air cleaner kits, which use an oval cover (S2 style) - similar to the Race air cleaner.

I use the tuned OEM snorkel with a K&N filter. HD dudes ask why it's so long, but the whole Helmholtz thing isn't something you explain over a beer/brat meal. The Snorkel gained me 4 mph on my unsanctioned 1/4 mi down the road from here

Coxter if you gained 4mph in 1/4 mile on the same day same track that is a good gain!!!!
i don't know what your talking about other than the k&n part as i'm not a products man, but i understand what a 4mph gain same day same track means! but if it was a different day did you check air quality at the track?
i've seen 2mph variation in trap speeds same bike same rider same track same tune on a different day . just better air quality they have the reading out on the time tickets
i never made any changes to the bike i would ride it 1,100 kilometres to some tracks to compete sometimes two day events then ride home, was bracket racing Sceaming eagle
so i did not want any changes i knew that bike felt like part of me. would run from 11.4 to 11.2 trap speed from 118mph to 121mph depending on the air quality, but the speed stayed the same on the day & if the 60 ft time stayed same & no missed shifs the ET would stay the same too
that is the best Dyno!!!!

So the stock air box makes more power supposedly but is designed to basically cut down sound harmonics though? It does not make sense to me does anyone have actual data to prove this compared to other option? I know I have notice better performance for me with aftermarket air clear setups while riding not racing.

On my dyno a aftermarket airfilter when tuned propper makes more HP then the restricted OEM airbox.

I had a 'hotrod' aircleaner on the bike when I bought it ( PO was a Harley dude ). Looked like 1/3 of a 3-deuce carb set up from the old hotrod days. I replaced it with the Helmholtz snorkel and a K&N cone. The snorkel lets air in, and whistles like a coke bottle you blow over the top. Instead of the sound coming back out, the soundwaves pulse INTO the engine. It's a resonant supercharger at 3500 RPM where the cams come on. It's what tuned port injection has been designed around for years. ( look at the 80s GM set-up all the street rodders use, and all the cool Bosch stuff from the 70s-80s ). The HVPS logo refers to this. Does it limit at higher RPMs? I don't think so, but the butt dyno says it works, and again my local ( when the sheriff isn't around ) 1/4 mi measured off I went from 105 to 109. The shorter intake tract would be tuned for much higher RPMs, which is not really a Buell way of thinking

OLD SCHOOL:

The DYNO is just a tool to get the tune in the ball park ...

The world is different on the RACE TRACK or on the OPEN ROAD ...

The DYNO can not duplicate the speed of the air going by you air cleaner in the real world world ...

Not many people can grasp the logic of intake pulses or for that matter exhaust pulses ...

Butt dynos and 1/4 mi times/speeds that ARENT on a track are just...whatever.
Go to a track and test stuff. Its even and consistent. If youre just running down the road who is to say you dont go over the 1/4 mile mark, or under, on one run vs another. Same for starting.
Keeping it at a track for actual figures ensures that its even (though, yes, you can deep stage and lose a few inches (two or three?)).

Also, unless the runs were almost back to back (same day, VERY similar conditions) then who knows.

"The DYNO can not duplicate the speed of the air going by you air cleaner in the real world world ..."

This was my concern when they were tuning my Sportster with the Forcewinder on the dyno. Even the tuner insisted on taking it for several rides after the dyno session to dial it in. I didn't get to ride it before and after, so I missed the chance to feel the difference. When I finish rebuilding it and take it in for the final tune, I will do a before and after ride.

When I change the intake on my S3 I will take a few test rides and see if I can get some time on the dyno to compare the difference.

You can point the dyno air blower right at it and get pretty darn close.
