I change tran oil to formula +, now on startup The gears grind from neutral to first only on the first shift, once running the cyclone will shift fine. Or if I blip the throttle to 3000 rpm before the first shift it shifts fine. What oil are you running and I heard that a 1200 clutch spring will get rid of this problem? I'm going to change the chain adjuster so no big deal changing the spring at that time.

I know you changed the fluid and it changed its behavior but bear with me:
Check your clutch cable at the lever for freying.
This was the first warning that mine was about to pop.

It may just be a coincidence of timing.

That was one of the first things I did, just seems strange, that the bike has no issues after blipping the throttle on startup as I read in the knowledge vault or before the oil change

My X1 never changed its tranny behavior when I was forced to use the new stuff.
As far as I could tell, the new stuff just smells worse.
I am running a stock clutch pack. Did you upgrade to some other flavor of plate that doesn't like the formula+9000 smell?

Sort of sounds like the clutch isn't releasing all the way. How far from the bar does it engage? Maybe put some more slack in it? Different oil will change the stiction between the plates. Maybe that's all it is?

Hoot has it right..Formula+ is a stickier fluid than most, and when cold, sticks the friction and steel plates together a bit. Your blip to 3000 separates the plates and then there is no force against the gear dogs when dropping it into gear. Once warmed up, it isn't an issue at all.

The stickiness of Formula+ is what helps with clutch hookup. I asked Erik what to run in my XBRR (AFTER he wasn't part of HD any more), and he said to run Formula+. I asked him why, and he said that it really helped with clutch hookup on that bike (150 HP). It also isn't a coincidence that it was released the same year that the XBs went to a lighter clutch spring and helical gears. That fluid has a lot of constraints on it (i.e., gear/shaft lube, wet clutch, stator bathed in it), and Formula+ was designed to be the best compromise for those constraints. The cold plate stiction is a minor annoyance at best. I won't run anything else in the primary.

Intersting what Al has to say, what i did when i had formula in mine was on start up , keep clutch pulled in till motor warmed up ( i feel barrels & cases to judge when motor warm ) so with clutch pulled in it helps plates stop binding.
but i switched to Redline MT i have one extra clutch plate with stock spring, i don't notice clutch slip only have 94HP 80TQ but they come in with full load on the DJ2501 in 3seconds wide open fourth gear. clutch slip has never effected my standing quarter times at all. i had a Dyna TC95" just stock frame stock swing arm stock foot shift stock clutch SE spring & ran 11.30 121 mph clutch slipped in 5th gear so i just held it in 4th over the line. i went to an s&s clutch was beautiful had the light springs no clutch slip but time went to 11.5 121mph as my 60 foot time was slower. i took months to get used to the clutch get my 60 foot time down. then saw other who said they had clutch slip & change there clutch, they went slower too.

You know, I just remembered something funny from my past.
My 1989 KLR250 if left alone for a week or more used to squeeze the oil out of the clutch.
I would pull it back out of the shed, start it up with the choke, poke it into first and it would launch back into the shed!
One solution that my friend suggested was to put a strap around the clutch when I parked it.
That worked fine but even more easy was clacking it in second gear.

In hindsight, that bike was lousy but I had a great deal of fun with it.

That's funny Nate, I had that same experience with my KLR-250 after doing clutch work on it, or if it sat for a long time.

There were some pretty comical scenes in the driveway trying to get that clutch unstuck.

And that was a lousy bike that was a lot of fun.
