I brought the '99 cyclone in to Zen motorsports, I just can't fix it on my own.

What is wrong, in no particular order;

battery box is rusted out - easy to tack in a plate of thin steel

oil leak, base gasket

intake seal is shot, can't even imagine how it ran looking at the damage

carbon buildup is significant, rear cylinder is pure white, with some slight scoring on the valve head

oil leak all around the starter

rust spot in cylinder from the time when it sat for a while (all this summer)

BIG one is - there is the slightest play on the rear tie rod, like the slightest, but my mechanic says it should be almost zero - the front has some play. I never beat the bike up, hardly ever hit red line, never wheelied, (ok, once)

= Is it worth tearing the motor to resolve or should I have him fix the base gasket on up and not touch the bottom end?

A little side to side play is normal; it's up and down play you don't want. Personally I'd pull it down and bead blast the heads and put new seals on them at minimum, but I also work in a shop and can do that for free.
