Perhaps not related to the original posting problem, but the Rocker Lockers look reasonable, anyone ever install them?

I agree; I meant not to imply that they are the problem, but if you are already in there, they are a legitimate, affordable upgrade to install while you have the motor apart. They also help gold the rocker shafts in place during the assembly process; more than a few times I've had to pull the rocker box back off so I could realign the shafts to fit the bolts.

To me the piston has no real scoring below the rings tell me that the piston isn't rocking. We see piston slapping / rocking with stroker kits with short skirted Pistons.

What I've seen with my S2 and other EVO XL engines if it sits for a long period of time or after rare down the front exhaust tappet will bleed down and take a 10 miles or more for it to pump back up. It's do to that front exhaust lift being the last to get the oil / pressure.

If you remove your lifters and they where drained out you should put them in a container filled with oil sitting up right overnight to help remover all the air.

If there is air in the lifters they will tick and the sound will travel into the top end.

What I have is the opposite; for the first 5 minutes everything seems normal, then "metallic" (not ticking) noise kicks in once engine's warmed up. I know what lifter ticking noise sounds like now after doing lifter cleaning and installation myself. My noise is totally different, it is like bell ringing.

Thunderstorm upgrade done.
Thunderstorm heads and pistons, new cylinders, B-cams(aka bolt-in or 497 cams), Q-curve ignition module, bronze pump drive gear and new gaskets. And some minor things that I don't remember now.
That annoying noise? Yeah, it is gone! What was the culprit? I do not know. I guess it is one of head gasket, piston or cylinder.
I am amazed at much louder exhaust note. I will have to find a way to pass noise inspection due in this summer.
Cams and rocker box are noisier but I can live with it: )
