So I bought my '97 S1 last year with about 5500 miles on it. The rear pads were pretty worn so I replaced them with a fresh set of EBC Kevlar organics. Now, less than 3000 miles later I noticed that my rear rotor is chewed up from the metal pad backing eating into it; the outer pad had already dissolved into dust.

I'm no high speed racer, just jetting around town mostly. I think my pads should definitely last longer than that. So I search for a harder set of replacement pads and I see that plenty of affordable choices are available for '98 up Lightning models, but the 96-97's require a much scarcer and expensive pad with limited choices in material type.

What's involved with swapping out my existing Brembo caliper system with something newer? Can I do a direct caliper swap and keep the old rotor? Or does everything have to be swapped? Is the mounting bracket on the swingarm the same for 96-97 and 98 Lightning and perhaps later models? I'd like to solve this problem now instead of waiting for it to happen again.

All of the S1,M2, and X1 calipers will swap over but you may need the mount with it. I believe there is a Nissin rear on the newer tubers which I believe is better.
There is a upgrade kit you can by from Twin Motorcycles and even a hidden version farely expensive though. Or there are links out on google explaining the parts needed to swap a Ducati rear in.

That being said your pads should have lasted way longer. The rear setup is a bear to bleed correctly the only way I could ever get mine to bleed correctly was remove the setup completely off the bike while assembled and hang it vertical in the garage then bleed it then reinstall. Otherwise the pads dragged huge.
I was lucky enough to get the rare upgraded rear 4 piston PM set up and it was cake to work on.

Personally I have 58,000 miles on my rear pads but then I use my front brake for braking and the rear brake to hold the bike at stops

Edv - And yes I use my rear brake and engine braking (same thing) frequently in a balanced and coordinated manner as any professional/skilled rider will. For instance, braking into an unknown corner that may have pebbles, gravel or oil residue on it. Or riding in the rain, especially after it just starts when that initial film of oil is first raised off the road's surface.

Relying strictly on your front brake at all times (except holding at the light) is asking for trouble...big trouble. That risk can be minimized by riding very slowly and cautiously at all times. But that's not my style on the S1 - I like to gas it. Of course, YMMV. Good luck completing your next 60K without the rear brake.

96s1 bought in 97.
106,000 miles and rear pads 1x maybe.
organic anything is a bad idea, not a good place to cheap out. semi-metallic HH grade is best for my use, no track days...

Oregon is a very rainy place until the drought the last few years. I ride the brakes on rainy days. You have to keep some heat in the brakes or there is 100% brake fade until you burn off the water and road grime off the pads and rotor. A Portlandia LEO died a decade ago on a rainy day, a car pulled out... I wondered then if he knew what I just shared.

Thanks S1owner. I snagged one yesterday on the 'bay. Hope to have it installed and ready for action by next weekend. One little upgrade and fix at a time. Sooner or later, my S1 will be all mine, just the way I want it and completely dialed in ready for action. ; )
