Anyone know if the Yamaha mirrors people use to replace the stock mirrors, require drilling the fairing? Thanks | ||

No drilling of the faring needed but you do have to modify the Yamaha mirror itself.The mirror has two studs,the stud at the trailing edge has to be cut off then you put the mirror on the faring using the stud at the leading edge to locate it,make a mark through the trailing edge hole and drill a hole for a 1/4"-20 stainless allen of the correct length.I drilled the side of the allens socket head and used safety wire to lock it to the mirror stem. | ||

Sebastian,they are Yamaha snowmobile mirrors that are close in appearance to stock mirrors.They are not an exact match as the body of the Yamaha mirror is slightly textured where the stock mirror body is smooth,but the shape is very close and the boot is slightly different as well.I suppose you could sand the textured finish and paint it with a gloss to more closely resemble stock.The positives are that the Yamaha mirrors are available,affordable and unlike the stock mirrors they don't develop the S2 droops.I have well over 100,000 miles on a set with no problem. EMGO makes replacement mirrors for Kawasaki ZX/ZX636 that have the same mounting hole pattern as the stock S2 mirrors. The part numbers are 20-43011 and 20-43012 - I bought a pair at Cycle Gear a few years ago for about $30 each. I can't remember exactly but I had to either switch the stalks left/right or turn the stalk upside down to get the mirror body at the same general position as the stock mirrors. The body has the same general shape as stock, but they don't have a boot on the stalk - similar to an S3 mirror. They provide two big improvements - the body is positioned about an inch further out (so I can see past my elbows) and the stalk hinge tension can be adjusted so they don't swing forward under hard braking. | ||

Drilling/tapping/installing (carefully) a set screw in the pivot area of the stock mirror also works well to prevent unwanted rotation. | ||

Thanks 1313, On the first photo, on the right-hand mirror of the Black Sapphire S2, there's a dot about a quarter inch from the mirror boot groove. That's the location of the set screw. As mentioned, my white S2 has the Emgo mirrors. I understand why you take so many photos... R | ||

Another trick for floppy S2 mirrors is a few drops of super glue. You can still move the mirror around but it really tightens things up. | ||

I used some blue Loctite and it worked great. Rode with Jolly last year in the mountains and held up all day. still to this day. Just make sure you have it where you want it. If you move it then it will break free. Unless you use Red Loctite. Then you may not be able to move at all. | ||

Don't be bother to buy the emgo aftermarket version of these mirrors, they suck badly. | ||

I installed a pair of Emgo mirrors two or three years ago and have had no issues. I've had better luck than with them then others I've tried in the past. Maybe I lucked out and got an unusually good set but I like them well enough that I plan to put a set on another S2 I'm working on. | ||
