Hello people of internetz!

I have been reading this forum for a couple of years and i feel like now is the time to introduce myself and my ride.

I live in northern europe, in ice cold Finland. (25°C at the moment)

I ride a 2002 Buell X1 which was sold new 2005. This is my 3rd summer owning it.
About 38 000km on the gauge.

I had some modifications done to it.
Starting with the engine:

Race exhaust and ECM, Carbon "force winder" intake with BIG K/N filter, NGK DCPR8E spark plugs with accel 8mm wires,
heavy duty cranckase ventilation, harder clutch spring.
Running with large oilfilter and Motul 7100 20W50 synthetic oil.

Body modifications:
Renthal aluminium handelbar, Oberon bar end mirrors, carbon "side panels", carbon belly pan, dual headlights, LED-indicators and LED taillight.

Because of the climate over here we are only able to ride about 5months/year over here. Last summer drove around the gulf of botnia 2500km in 4 days. One week after that trip the belt snapped so i had to replace that.

This season didnt start so good eighter. I have to replace the sealings in the fork and also yesterday my exhaust header cracked so i need to weld it.

The bike always runs like a bag of potatoes when cold and misfires a lot befor it get correct temperature. If i drive alot in town i need to clean my plugs cause they get all black and full of soot.
To solv this i am planning to install a heated o2 sensor.

This is a picture of me last summer in the city of Arvudsjaur. We had a 800km ride that day so i was kind of tired in the evening.

Finland is a great country ,we had a nice bike trip there in 09

Keep your drive belt halfway between "sloppy loose" and "scary loose". You should be able to push it down and touch the swing arm at rest. They shouldn't break if properly adjusted.

If you have access to ECMspy, check and see if the intake air temperature and the cylinder head temperature readings are less than +/- 5 degrees apart before you fire up the engine. If not, one of the sensors, most likely the head temperature sensor is not working properly. In your bike, it's located in the hole inside the rocker covers. While you're connected, check the AFV reading and if its outside of the 90-110 range, you'll need to look for the cause. If it's outside and above the range, look for leaks in the intake tract, particularly intake seals. If is outside and below the range, I would look for a faulty O2 sensor or defective injectors. This all assuming that your fuel maps match your intake/exhaust set up and the bike used to run well at some point. Any of these conditions could explain your running issues. And last but not least, welcome to the board.

Hello Simon.

Welcome to BadWeb

Our sister-in-law hails from Vaasa, Finland. She is very beautiful and used to work for Wartsila in Finland. You live in a very beautiful part of the world.

I too own an X1 Lightning. They are amazing bikes and handle very well. Here is what I would like you to try.
1.) Start your bike and let it idle for several minutes
2.) After you start your first ride, go slow until you have a good heat soak in the engine and transmission

You may indeed have an O2 sensor that is not working correctly, you can buy one here...American Sport Bike
You may also have an Engine Temperature Sensor that is not working properly, also can buy one here...American Sport Bike

You'll get your bike running properly soon with your wrenching and the knowledge of this board, that I am sure of.
