The down side of having a petcock with reservoir, is that the bike can start missing while passing a truck in the highway... not good.

My suggestion is to put a low level light, instead of the 2-position petcock.
There is an enduro/motocross bike called BETA, model ALP 4-T.
It has a low level switch right in the petcock. Distance of holes on mounting base is 33.5 mm.

Look at this pic:

I googled and got this site:

A level switch instead of the std petcock!

The sweet option is to replace your existing Tachometer, by the S1/X1, which has a socket light for low gas. And wire it to the petcock!

Enjoy!

Might be ok, but. any type of warning light, is known as an idiot light.
i've been riding & racing 50 years & that has never ever happened on a bike. i know when my gas is low by the distance i've ridden. if i've ridden 150mile i will turn to reserve & look for gas.
cars have idiot lights, MC's need to be simple & light, the less amount of wiring the better.
have you ever weighed a EFI wiring loom?

I don't trust idiot lights.

If an idiot light is not lit that usually means all is OK - but it could also mean that the lamp is burned out.

Look into the fuel tank before you start the bike.

If you need gas, get gas.

Works every time.

Looks like it's worth a try. Did you do it yet, or looking at it?
I've done the truck pass/switch to reserve thing, it is unsettling. I already use the Tripmeter as an approximate fuel gauge. What I think we need is dual petcocks. The tank shape makes using the entire capacity a problem, the petcock isn't even at the lowest point.
