Ok, from one slight problem to another. So i just got this lovely M2. It's been stored for about 7 years. Had a back pressure problem, which you all helped me track. Now i find a carb problem. Starts pretty good. idles, warms up. Revs in the garage normally. Take it out and after a block/ 1/4 mile'ish it's sucking air like its out of gas. It dies, but restarts. It'll idle but under load/pull struggles and starves. if i play with the throttle i can limp it home. WTF? Gas is full. Filter clean. Fuel line is not crimped. | ||

Have you checked the vent tube for the gas tank? If it is clogged, it can cause a vacuum as you burn fuel. It causes a fuel starvation issue that goes away after the bike sits for a few minutes. The vacuum goes away, and bike runs normal again until you burn enough fuel out of the tank for it to happen again. A dead ringer for it is to run the bike until the condition happens, and then immediately open the fuel cap. If it is suctioned in place or you get a WHOOSH! sound of air rushing into the tank, then you have a clogged vent line. | ||

Quick trouble shooting step - next time it does it, just pop the gas cap. If it starts running aain, it has a vent issue. there is an anti tip over valve in the tank - it that got gummed up it might be stuck closed. I bet that s the problem right there | ||

Damn, i'll do the gas cap trick. I didnt think the M2 had that valve. I heard about it but thought it was just the S1 and S3. | ||

OLD SCHOOL: I took the check valve apart and removed the check ball on my 97S3T and cut it off on my 2000 P3(BLAST)... Problem cure'ed !!! | ||

Looking at the parts manual, the check valve is located in the tank, screwed into the 90 degree fitting on top of the tank. | ||

The check valve? Yes does not matter if its on or off the bike just make sure you catch the inside piece and pull it out that is the check valve | ||

The piece sticking up on the front of the gas cap ring with a hose coming from it is the check valve  | ||

yeah, it can be removed on the bike, just be sure to support it well from the bottom because when you pull off the top part, the bottom part will want to follow gravity and fall into the tank. it's plastic, so you cannot use a magnet to fish it back out. I have seen pictures of a forked tool to hold it in place when reinstalling, but I have gotten away with using my fingers and prehensile tail. A popsicle stick and wad of bubblegum (pre-chewed) would work as well. If it does fall into the tank, to get it back out without removing the tank, just pick the motorcycle up, turn it upside down and shake. It's a good idea to drain the fluids first. it may be easier to remove the tank... In any event, I can list some pre-chewed bubble gum in the classified if anyone needs some... | ||

Ok I havent gotten a chance to look at it yet as ive been doing 12 hour shifts. But, from the recall drawing and your photo here it seems as though i should be able to reach it and hold it with my hands. The recall says you need angle needle nose pliers. Is that necessary? | ||

OK, THANKS I might have to buy some of that gum foe saturday when i finally give this dude a shot. I'm hoping that between the Vent and Valve it will fix the problem. If not. i'll be taking apart the carb. Luckily i got that carb 101 from Buellistic and will probably do the whole "Mod" if i have to take the carb off. I should probably change the manifold gaskets as well if i go the whole nine yards. | ||

They are easy to work on and when you reassemble use slide lube on the rubber gasket | ||

Will it run with the choke? Sitting for that long have you cleaned the jets or just get new ones? What do the plugs look like? I got an engine that sat for 10 years - valve seals went bad. would run but fart, | ||

Starts with choke but wont run/idle with it. Runs well when warmed until it starts starving! | ||

Hey Brothers, i spent two long hours checking breathers, vents and valves but no problems there. I wont have another day off until the weekend of the 25/26 so then i will probably tear down the carb. | ||
