So I decided to finally completely tear down my S2T for restoration, since I have the Uly now. This thread will be about the journey and the destination. Thus far my plan is a killer motor build, different wheels, brakes, and front end, and new colors. This bike has 60,000, so I want to refresh it and make it look better than new, both in condition and finish. I'm keeping the color combo close to the chest until a bit later so you'll have to stay tuned to see what I have planned ; ).

I pulled the bodywork off last week.

Then yesterday, I got a bit further, and pulled the frame off and pulled off the top end, cams, and primary.

Today, I managed to pull the front pulley, shock, and swingarm mount from the motor, though I forgot to take pictures. As I have time this week I'll start cleaning parts and further stripping down the frame, front end, and swingarm/wheel assembly. I want to rewire the bike to cure some issues that were Mickey Moused by one of the POs, as well as hopefully rid myself of the stock style relays, though admitted all my issues with them were on my last S2, not this one. We'll see how things go this week, and I'll try to remember to get today's progress pictures tomorrow morning.

Mind you, this is what it looked like before.

Obligatory progress pics from yesterday : ).

And on an unrelated note, my Hero blue flyscreen came in for my Uly. The matching air box cover should be here in the next day or two : D.

Zac and I both rode our Ulys today.

Today I only managed to pull the rear brake setup and the ignition from the frame as far as tear down goes, but I decided to go ahead and cut the cam cover down.

I wanted a different shape than most cuts. I always liked the S&S cam covers; I think they look beefy and muscular. But I don't want to pay $500 for one. So I gave mine a similar angle cut at the rear. I may try and play with the contours on the face as well but there isn't a lot of material to do so.

With the exception of a few bolts, I've pretty much completely disassembled the entire bike to my needs. I don't plan to split the cases for this iteration unless I find a killer deal on a lighter Buell crank, though eventually I will rebuild the bottom end or replace it with another I build.

The frame is fully stripped; I'm going to make some changes to it and powdercoat it once I get the wheels and other parts that are to be powdered at the same time.

The wiring is a hot mess; I'm not planning to use any of it. I'm going to get a Thunderheart harness with built in relays, Dyna ignition, and switch to an XB 3 phase stator and voltage regulator. I'm not going to use the S1 switch gear or throttle either, as I'm going to use some Ducati switch gear (rounder profile, all red switches) and separate throttle tube.

I did find this tasty number on eBay... 3" over.

Ross, why the 3" over swingarm? Are you setting it up for 1/8th or 1/4 mile?

I love your cut down cam cover.I've got to do the one on the S3T when I pull it down for top end gaskets.

Thanks for the kind words Mike! Come to Berthoud in July and you'll see the bike in person : D. Yeah I plan to drag race it some, but mostly for looks and to make wheelies a bit more controllable. I'm building a nuts-out motor for it so I'll make use of the arm. I'll probably brace it as well before I powder coat it.

Decided against the +3" swingarm, and I listed a bunch of stuff in the classifieds.

This build has been slow since I made the irrational decision a while back to hot rod the Uly, but now that the Uly is pretty much done, I need and want to get this back together. The XB heads I got for it had trashed exhaust studs, so they are at the welder's for repair, and I'll drill and install new studs once I get them back. And today, I picked up these gems for the project. Can you tell the direction I'm going with this?

Ding dings! DDFI, because why the heck not? Until now I didn't have a wiring harness, ECM, carburetor, or hand controls anyway, so might as well get and use the stuff I want. This way I'll be able to tune it the same way I tune my Uly- with a laptop, cable, and tablet : ).

Jim are you talking about John's cafe S2? It looks sweet. I have some cool ideas for this one but it will take a little time.

Slow progress is still progress right? Today I went ahead and split the cases for various reasons. I need to drill a couple holes to mount a speedometer sensor, which requires the 5th gear to be pulled out of the way (will do that tomorrow, and I wanted to clean these up and possibly paint them, as the only color I've ever seen on them was grease!

After looking at yesterday's pictures I just have to butt in.
If you'd just use a little Loctite you wouldn't have all of these parts falling off.

Today with Dan's help I pressed the crank back in and reassembled the cases. We also drilled the tappet pin holes and put the longer Zipper's pins in to avoid the possibility of the lifters spinning in the bore and reinstalled 5th gear.

Oh, I forgot to post that I did get the holes drilled to mount the speedo sensor. I did also have to shave about 1/8" off the boss to get the height right.

It's a set I got several months ago from eBay. They came from a set of 54mm convertibars. They are bent to hell. I was hoping I could straighten them out to use them as WesTek style clamps, but so far no avail. I need to get off my tush and get with Marc to have him make some, but I'm not sure that I'll be using S2 style clip ons for this build. I may use a FatBar setup instead as I'm also using 7/8" controls again.

Ross ,can you give some more details about the location for drilling the hole for the sensor?

Thanks

I'll take some measurements Saturday when I'm back in the shop. I remember I had to remove about .100" off the surface to get the depth right.
