HD emblems

HD emblems

Trying to fit HD emblems on the Buell. It feels like a modern version of my XLCR, and I want to mess with my HD buddies...lol. I can't find a decent spot on the left side of the X1, and I don't want to try to reshape the metal badges. Any opinions on the placements, and not being symmetrical?

Haha...I expected as much. But,as an owner of a 77 XLCR (that I really love riding in the twisties)...I think the X1 is a modern version of the XLCR. The riding position feels the same, and it brings the same smile to my face. Not to disrespect Eric Buell, but it was sold by Harley. I love the look of the emblems on the XLCR, but I can't fit them in the same spot on the X1. I am not peeling off the Buell emblems.
I am thinking I may just go with the one emblem on top of the tank.

It's your bike do with it what you want.
Heck, put a Ford and Chevy emblem on it while you are at it...

ok, Ill lead off....!!!

IM SOOOOOOOOO confused right now..... not a hater, I own and ride HD as well, and moto guzzi and triumph and....

so the confusing part for me is why would you want to advertise for the corporation that so ceremoniously shut down Buell on the very bike product line that HD wanted absolutely nothing to do with?

Ever walk into a dealership when they sold Buells? They advertised for Buell because HD corporation told them to but "most" dealerships wouldnt even talk to you as a customer once you identified with Buell, some were great however and deserve credit for their personal approach to the Buell product line, but a lot were not....

Having a Buell sticker and a HD sticker on your bike is like being half Italian and half Sicilian, most of the world doesnt get it, but secretly each side of you hates the other....(ok yeah old history but my other example was even less appropriate....)

My personal recommendation is put the stickers on your tool box.

LOL! Not likely, I'm a Dodge man.
But it would be cool to have a "Powered by Harley" emblem.

Yeah, well at least this was actually sold/owned by HD so ease up with giving the guy crap about the HD emblems/stickers

Put the HD stickers down and step away from the Buell Sir : )

Just yanking your chain, I am a big believer in personal preference guiding aesthetic decisions. Besides, they do kinda look at home on that matte black finish...

Do what you like, but it is like putting Lincoln badging on your Pantera because it is powered by Ford and was sold at a Lincoln dealership - just to mess with your friends who drive Lincolns !

Early on and even to this date no one hardly knows what a BUELL even is ...

"SO", "i" put some "HARLEY-DAVIDSON" emblems in certain places ...

When people would ask what it was(1997 S3T), "i" said it was a "SPORTSTER" on "STEROIDS" made at the HARLEY-DAVIDSON "BUELL SKUNK WORKS" Plant ...

It's really surprising how many Harley guys have no idea what a Buell is!
I have a 77 XLCR Harley Cafe Racer. I love that bike...even have a tattoo of it on my arm. It is one of the bikes that I am going to be buried with. But I am constantly explaining to Harley guys what the hell it is (besides an unreliable paintshaker that vibrates bits off all the time). The Buell is my comfy/reliable XLCR.
I know the Buell story, and I know some dealers were dicks, and that Harley corp were dicks to Eric...but they owned 98% of the company at the time my bike was built, and it's a Harley engine...so by weight it's about 70% Harley! Like it or not...
I'm not trying to offend Buell owners, this is about sticking one in the eye of the uppity HD guys that would never ride with a sportbike because they think they are all Japanese...and I kind of like blowing past guys on a "Harley".

That's just the Buell telling you "no."

When my Buell was red and shiney folks actually argued with me that it was a Ducati.

Some folks have asked what happened to my Harley

"Do what you like, but it is like putting Lincoln badging on your Pantera because it is powered by Ford and was sold at a Lincoln dealership - just to mess with your friends who drive Lincolns ! "

If I owned a Pantera I could be sorely tempted...lol. But Lincoln didnt own 98% of DeTomaso. I think it was the Boss 351 spec Cleveland engine that made the Pantera cool, so that argument kind of supports me. I would rather have a Pantera than a similar Maserati. The Pantera was like the Jensen Interceptor and the Buell...big lumpy American engines scaring women and children all over the world!

Oh, and my opinion - the top of the tank like in the second pic. That way you dont lose the sticker when you ditch the God-awful factory airbox : )

Different strokes man.

Unless you own an 1125, you are stuck having to deal with the MoCo. It is what it is.

To even be able to find the parts you need, you have to reference the HD equivalent or you get the stink eye at many places.

One day I expect the 95-2010 Buells to be viewed like AMC Harleys.

I have a pair of the factory metal emblems, so I can use both locations, and if I do ditch the airbox I would still have one.

Funny thing about the AMF Harleys...they have their own group of fans. Some of the AMF bikes are good ones. I have had people hunt me down to do photoshoots with other AMF era bikes. As you say, different strokes...

I like the Pantera analogy!! well thought of!...Ive driven one of those when a "big city" in Kansas was first working an expressway around the city...sort of..anyway it was closed...so we were the only traffic, wow that car was cool!!!!

ok, now I'm just having fun...

"its like an animal rights activist in full advertising t-shirt and head band sitting down to an all you can eat smoked bar-b-que with his sign at his side"

"its like a member of Hitler's SS sitting in an Orthodox Jewish service"

"its like a suicide bomber wearing a right to life t-shirt"

"Its like Obama wearing a red tie.."

"its like...." oh man the list could really get bad!!

I get it and share the frustration of having to be tied to HD simply for the motor Buell used, the simplicity of the motor and its low RPM torque is much of the allure, however HD and the typical HD "crowd" just doesn't get it, and I honestly feel there is a loss there....

So I ride my fatboy or my street glide every time the type of riding calls for something along those lines, secretly wishing to be on one of my Buells!!

not everything has to be symmetrical, think about the rally stripe on the left side of the car...

I might say the best place is actually on the right side air box....

or you could get one of the new HD skull emblems that they came out with on the 2015 bikes and put it on the bikini fairing.....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stickers-Chrome-H-D-Willie -G-Skull-Medallion-Emblem-street-glide-motor-/3712 11442704?var=&hash=item566ded1a10&vxp=mtr

or a custom timing cover that says

"Powered by HD, engineered by Buell"

"Powered by HD, engineered by Buell"
That I like.

I would like to run an earlier Buell stock oval/pancake air cleaner, but I'm not sure I want to mess with the intake. I do not want a carbon fiber cover. If I change it I will pry off the emblem. LOL

post some photos of the XLCR!!

that bike made it into one movie to try and launch it into the hearts and minds of movie goers....

Black Rain!

A then young Michael Douglas tore up the back streets on a XLCR....

anyway,

I think the subtle "prod" works best, either right side, single emblem, or a custom cut timing cover with a Pegasus in the middle and outside arc top half "powered by Harley Davidson - bottom arc Engineered by Buell"..

I know a guy that will produce that fairly quickly if you're interested....

not to mention the obvious - but - didn't the RR1200 sticker on the back of the bike state right under the RR1200 "powered by Harley Davidson"?

XLCR

side A...lol

Yep. I was young and impressionable when I saw "Black Rain" in the theater. Michael Douglas was a badass...the cop street racing for money with no helmet. It made the XLCR look fast.
I was looking for a cheap Sportster, and found this XLCR...this one was modified by the previous owner...no quarter fairing, painted silver, bobbed fender to look like an XR750. The ad was worded in such a way that everyone thought it was a replica, but it is an original. The owner and the VINs verified it. It may not look as badass as the original, but it is too pretty to mess with. I have the original rims and some miscellaneous parts put away...will probably gather the rest of the original parts just to have, but the guy spent so much money on the pro paint job, powder coating, custom bags etc...I am enjoying it the way it is.

Now, that's one pretty motorcycle deserving that emblem. Very tastefully done. As for the Buell, I would go with a little smaller emblem if you really want to go that route.

I like the XLCR, You've got a nice clean version! Too bad HD couldn't continue that line of approach and really make something of what the original sportster line was meant to be, lean and quick, instead of morphing it into everyone's favorite beginner class bike. They were really onto something with that bike.

..and they couldn't give them away. They sat in the showrooms for years. I bet more than half of the 3000 made have already been cut up.

Just FYI, the bike used in black rain was not a real XLCR. It was a standard sportster with some XLCR parts bolted on.

My 1977 XLCR was one of the best motorcycles I've ever had. I bought it and my 1983 XR-1000 the same day and enjoyed both. The XLCR was a better bike than it ever got credit for.

I've actually got one of the quite rare XLCR posters than was sent to me by a reader in Great Britain.

There have always been rumors about 6 XLCR's that were made, and VIN'd, in 1979 with the remaining parts. I've never seen any verification.

Yeah, I watched Black Rain last night, for the first time since I saw it in the theater. I think it was a Tracy fairing? ...covered headlight, colored emblems on the tank...but it was still badass.
I have seen the '79s included in the production numbers...definitely only a handful if any.

"...and they couldn't give them away...."

Same thing happened to the recent XR1200 line of Sporsters. They gobbled them up in Europe but never sold well in the States. I was inches away from buying an orange one off the showroom and still kick myself for not pulling the trigger...

Yeah, I had an opportunity, with an orange and a black one sitting on a dealer floor, had my choice, timing wasn't perfect, thought they would be avail for a long time....

Fortunately they can still be found, there are 6 or 7 on eBay right now....so it goes... On "the list"..... : )
