For all of you out there like me that have a fair amount of mileage on there bikes. Mine has 90,000 and you have never looked at your drive gear well all is not lost. I just pulled my pump and there was no ugly wear that I can find. Do I think it was something worth doing yes I do but it ends up being more piece of mind than impending doom. Remember that only the 2 socket head screws need come out the Torx screws just hold the cover on unlike earlier Sportsters. I also removed it and reinstalled it removing only the hose to the oil filter.

The one behind the pinion gear was good too?

Its the one that drives the one on the oilpump that is the problem. When you have the oilpump off, you can look up into the cavity and inspect it.

Whitebuell made a pretty convincing case that the problem was actually traceable to how the case was machined, and he fixed his wear issue by machining the oil pump to correct his case misalignment.

So it is possible (even likely) that some bikes will never eat that pinion gear.

As noted, the gear that wears is the one up under the cam cover, no the one that is part of the oil pump assembly.

The people that were having problems were finding out the hard way around 20,000 and under in some cases.
It seems if you get above a certain distance, then you have a good one and need not bother worrying.
By the time I even heard about this issue, my bike had over 40,000 on it and I figured I was safe.
So far, so good at almost 90K now.

Mine has 35-40k on the clock.

I am getting a slight bit of wear but nothing yet terminal.

I'm replacing as a prophylactic measure while I have the rest of the bike torn down.

I've done this on every other bike I have except my S1W which has the highest mileage of all my bikes at 38k, just ordered everything and will do this one first chance I get.

I helped a buddy tear into his bike with about 20k mikes and it had very visible wear pattern setting with some teeth teeth clearly sharpened but still flat (not sharpened to a point), so it was definitely time to do the job!!
