I'm finally going to make some time and replace the starter on my S2, it has multiple problems and not sure I want to mess with removing it, then finding that it might not be worth rebuilding and have the bike sit dormant and apart while I order a starter, so just going to buy a new one....

anyone have success with less expensive starters?

prices are all over the place!

found this one on ebay for 135.00...seems to be the cheapest out there, but sometimes you get what you pay for and I would rather not be stranded...

anyone bought one of these and have a story to share either good or bad?

or there is the allballs one on ebay..for 283.00

or the stock mfg at over 350.00 (I think)

I don't normally go chinzy on electrical stuff but more and more these days a large number of them are made in china any way...so why pay more for it if I don't need to...

Koz5150, what starter have you got? I'm looking for the higher torque, 1.4kw starter, in black, any chance that's what you have? PM sent

thanks

I put a cheap one on the Sportster many years ago. No problems so far. Must have 20k miles on it. Running a compression ratio over 11:1 with N4 cams.

Don't be afraid of reconditioned starters. Bead blasted and repainted, guts replaced, they're effectively new.

There is a 2010 blast starter on e-bay for $50 if you read the whole ad it has 1750 miles on it not 25000 I Know the blast starters were the same as sportsters and Buell.however you would have to make sure the years were compatable.}}}

I would really like to take a look at your old starter and see if I can get some part numbers that we can use to rebuild ourselves. I have a feeling 90% is toyota-interchangeable. I was a reman engineer for Case a few years back and still have a few connections. Lemme know.

I bought the '$135 Starter' from Rare Electrical. It's on my'08 Uly. It was a noticeable improvement in starting quality over my other two XB's. It's only been two or three months, but I plan on replacing any that go out with this part. It's manufactured by NIPPONDENSO, and looks legit/well made. Had originally wanted to replace the sprag on my old starter, but was cheaper (considering labor) and it replaced everything...

I know that starters can be rebuilt/repaired, but $135 for the peace of mind it buys (particularly on a bike like the Uly, where you could be far away from help) is totally worth it, at least to me. I can see that others feel differently, and I mean no disrespect. :-)
