Don't bother with a stock ECM. Get the "Race" version or a flashed stocker. The stock ECM was really lean and ran like crap.

Moto619,
Interchangeable - somewhat...
You can put a later ECM on an early DDFI system like you're describing, but shouldn't (can - but shouldn't) put an early ECM on a late system (due to temp sensor location).

The very first 1999 computers had issues but were reflashed with new fuel curves to be the same as 2000.

As said above, don't bother- get the race ECU.

Get the 2000 ECM from ebay and flash it with the race map using ecmspy. Will work just fine.

I will probably go with the race ECM. I tried ecmspy on this ecm and it never worked again.

There were five calibration improvements to the original Race ECM calibration.
Later is better.
In the race ECM , look for calibration label numbers ending in - or with a "4J" or "3K" imbedded in the number (if the labels are still in place).

I know some folks here had issues trying to load ECM maps from newer 2000 or 2001 X1 onto a 1999 X1 ECM but theoretically you should be able to swap the entire ECM unit assuming its data is not corrupted. What is the production date of your bike?

I think you have to update the code in the 99 ECM before you can load the later maps. Mine was flashed by a dealer and then updated to a newer map. I have since bought a race ECM, and given the stock unit to a badwebber whom shall remain nameless (because I forgot who I gave it to).

How do I find the production date of my Bike? Where is a good place to buy race ECM's?

Production date is printed on a small sticker/label on the frame near the clutch cable behind the triple tree.

Just remap yours with ECM-Spy, way cheaper that a "race " ecu. Probably have good map here I can send you.

Moto, what's the code on the label on the ECM? It should read something like this US15JA120, etc. As Fireman mentioned, you could try loading a Race map using ECMSpy if your firmware doesn't reject the map. What intake/exhaust set up do you have on the bike?

The production date of the bike is September 1998. The code is US06Go0__ (could not read the last few digits). There was also these codes: BFI US0 and NO306_K_98240.

Here is the whole story with this bike for the past few years it has been running bad. It lurches when the throttle is kept steady. Runs perfect at full throttle.

Based upon a thread I started here I bought Ecmspy and performed a TPS reset. This did not change anything. I then changed the mapping. Following this the bike would not run / multiple error codes appeared. It will now only start/ run momentarily when the starter button is depressed. I tried to reinstall the original map no luck.

I talked to another member here that has a 99 X1 he had the same exact thing happen to him. He thinks there is a glitch in the ecmspy with only the 99 x-1.

That is where I am at now and thus my idea was just buy a race ECM.

06G is the last revision of the original (1999 version) firmware. If your bike was a September 1998 build, it was built with a " 02G" calibration. Having an 06G label means the bike either had the "B017" calibration upgrade (released in May of 1999) or the ECM was replaced at some point.
I'm not too certain if ECMspy is compatible with all three versions of the firmware. I'm sure someone else here will know.

Thanks just bought it. So do I have to do anything special before I install it or just plug it in.

Plug it in. But then you need to do a tps reset. The new ecm needs to know the voltage offset that is unique to your throttle position sensor.
