Before I replace my starter is there any other troubleshooting I can do? Ive installed a new batter + charge and cleaned battery cables...

Starter relay? It was kinda draggin and barely wanting to turn over fast enough, thought it was my batter. Same thing still dragging and not turning the motor fast enough. Also now its clicking alot on a full charge.

Battery cables could be bad, but make sure connections are clean and shiny on BOTH ends, nice clean ground on frame.

First try bypassing the ignition switch. Then take the starter off and bench test it to see if it spins full speed without a load. Then put it back in and bypass the starter switch. Then and only then replace it.

There is a small washer between the frame and the grounding strap that is attached to your swingarm. This part rusted on my bike and cause the same issue. I replaced mine with a stainless lock washer and have not had a problem in the last 9 years. It is worth a quick look.

This time of year is hard on the battery.

If it's over 7 years old, replace it. Newer than 5 years, probably need to get it load tested at a good battery shop.

Like everybody above said, check everything, before you throw money at it.

The REAL WORLD LOAD TEST !!!

Push starter button, STARTER CLICKS ...

Pull LIGHT FUSES, ENGINE STARTS ...

This means one of two things: battery needs charging or battery fails REAL WORLD LOAD TEST and needs to be replaced ...

Ever wonder why when you go to start your car with the lights on they go out when you hit start, "BUT" WHEN YOU START YOUR BIKE THEY STAY ON ???

Batteries are like everything else, you can buy a new one and it can be bad ...

Every battery(motor cycle or car)that "i" buy goes on the charger for 24 hours ...

The last battery "i" bought for the car, did the charge thing, put the battery in, lights worked, "BUT" a no start !!!

Took it back, it failed the load test and "i" was given a new battery which would start the car ...

Have you tried a car battery wired with heavy gauge cables, not jumpers? If the starter turns strong from a huge power source and not with a new proper-sized one, the ground circuit is suspect. The cable to the starter from the battery might be loose, under-crimped, or corroded at the starter end, have you removed the red cable to look at both ends?

MYSTERY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS Class 101

1) All screw down/bolt down connections are CLEAN and TIGHT ...

2) All plug in connector contacts are clean and tight(electrical grease) ...

3) All the wiring covering looks good ...

Now see if the trouble is still there ???

IF NOT YOU ARE HOME FREE !!!

IF NOT, NOW YOU START TROUBLE SHOOTING !!!

One last thing now needs to be done which is tye wrap all your wiring to the frame/what ever so it is not doing the wiggle test while riding(the wiggle test is part of trouble shooting) ...

A "HIGH RESISTANCE OPEN" will not let the current/voltage pass freely through it which means it will get HOT enough to melt the insulation and/or burn your finger if you touch ...

It acts just like putting too small a fuse in a circuit which will cause strange things to happen ...
