had my 96 S1 about a year and a half bought it with 16k have put another 10k on it. honestly the most fun bike i ever owned. put an hsr42 with a forcewinder and it already had a supertrapp exhaust. like my profile says it's like riding a 500cc two stroke motocrosser on the street.

Bomber says: "figure that you're buying a 2-wheel GT350 Shelby, and you'll be in the right ballpark"

I always figured them for two wheeled AC Cobras: Euro-esque tube trellis chassis', torquey snarling big-inch American motors, glassfibre in lusty spartan organic lines. They both trigger the "purposeful beauty" region of my yogurt bowl and pique my "throttle steer" disorder.

Mosport: top of turn 2

My '96 has 33k miles with the original belt still in place and it sees lots of hard use both on the street and at local roadrace circuits. Only real inconvenience has been brake light switches that almost never work, and the other day the front engine mounting bolts sheared off in the head. I don't care, I'm happy to fix it and keep riding cause I love the thing. It's the most all around entertaining motorcycle I've ever owned, period.

Last month at Ontario's Sportbike Rally in Perry Sound everywhere I parked it, lost in a sea of leading edge sport hardware, people stopped to check it out commenting how cool they thought it was. "Brutal" was a word I heard often.

I prefer to think of it as "elemental". It delivers performance without flourish or pretense. It's a roll-on giant with instant and hugely satisfying throttle response. It's lean and honest like an old bevel drive Ducati and it's more monstrous than a Monster.

All my riding buddies think it's an awesome bike. A few of them went out and got their own S1's. A few others are still looking.

Why Buell stopped making these bikes I'll never know.

Nah Lornce that's an incorrect statement! The Cobra chassis is junk. Looks like it came off a truck. It's not a tube frame! Now talk TVR and you get the picture.

I've often compared Buell to TVR on the BadWeB, and believe me that's a valid comparison in more ways than I could ever make an American believe. Of course, TVR have stunning 200mph performance these days. Just wish Buell had done likewise. Cobra, no way.

the buell tvr comparison is a good one, I think, having piloted both

can't say the same about AC Cobras -- though I've driven a recently-engineered kit repro, something tell em it ain't the same

Timbo, it's good to see another beauty..... I have a '98 S1W in Orange/ Nuclear Blue too and think it's just the most stunning bike I've seen.
I've had her 5 years and there is NOTHING on the market that makes me think of changing her.
I've just done 10,000 miles and had her serviced and had the HSR42 fitted, she's running absolutely brilliantly now.
If you don't mind drawing attention to yourself, and you want to have a bike that handles really well, stops on a dime, accelerates HARD and looks the dogs danglies, buy an S1.

I had a 1996 S1 (high voltage yellow) and I can honestly say I wish I still had it. I felt like it was a much better made bike.

I currently have a 2000 X1 which I love too, but you couldn't beat the head turning looks of the high voltage yellow color!

I dropped my '96 S1 off at the shop today ! It developed an exhaust leak last year and I tried to fix it myself and wound up making things worse, then I bought a new XB9S and kinda put the S1 on the back burner, the I bought a new Ducati monster and it went even further back. I ran across a new cycle shop here in San Antonio though and I thought I'd let him work on the S1. When I was loading it on the trailer, I fell in love with it again, what a machine. I can't wait to ride it again.

Speaking of attention getting,
On the S1 and on the way home from work today (downtown Long Beach) I had three very distinct "looks".

First was in Downtown (kinda rough area), group of thug looking dudes hangin' out, all turn to look as I come around the corner rolling on the throttle. One steps out of the group and pumps his fist in the air a couple times then holds it high as I tach it up and nail the next gear, I nod as I go by.

Second, approaching Anahiem street on Long Beach Blvd, I split lanes as traffic is about ten cars deep at the intersection. Take off from the green light, intermittently watching my six for any LEO's. Notice one car imparticular weaving in and out of the other cars to get in front of the pack. He eventually does and catches up to me as I wait at a red light. Stops right next to me (kinda close), I wait a few seconds, then look over at him. It's a Mustang and he is staring at the bike. We make eye contact and he nods approval with a smile.

Third and best, almost home, waiting in the left hand turn lane, a few cars back from the intersection (facing east), a car taveling south makes a right at the intersection and is now going west past me, it has two young females in it, so naturally I'm looking, funny thing is they are watching me too (or my bike, one of the two). As they go past they both lean my way and crane their necks as they go past. The girl driving almost hits the center dividing island and has to yank the wheel to avoid it.

I started laughing, that last one made me feel the best.

Yep, on an S1 you WILL get attention (even sitting still).

Speaking of noisy S1 exhaust....

I'm still trying to comprehend this in my mind because the whole thing is a little strange.

I was buzzing around town about a month ago doing some errands. I'm mostly picking up small things so I take the S1W and my sling bag. My last stop was at Harbor Freight to get a few quick connects for some air tools. I park right in front of the doors (illegally) because I know I'll be in & out in a hurry. I get my parts and hop on Marilyn. Sometime during the short time I'm in the store, a Harley Road King parks about 3 ft to my left. I fire up the bike and give her a little throttle. All of the sudden....BLEEEEP, BLEEEEEP, BLEEEEEP.....there's a freckin' alarm on the Harley that's blaring like a banshe. I pull away laugh my off under my helmet.

Who in there right mind has an alarm set that sensitive on a Harley?!??!?! Remind me never to ride with that dude: D

Some awwwesome riding in Northern Ontario this weekend, Kahuna. You should'a bin there. Next time my friend, next time.

Think this pic of Sean Higbee on a Malibu back road perfectly captures the spirit and style of the S1 Buell ~ the coolest production motorcycle to come down the pipe in a long long time.

Buell on,
Lornce
