Slowly getting x1 back together and looking for a different air cleaner. I foolishly traded away my carbon fiber air cleaner for a forcewinder and now wish I hadn't... I like the look of the prospect hill also. Any suggestions?

The Hurricane with carbon cover looks the same as the original Buell Race Kit one. Three inch K&N, Carbon fiber lid and all.

The Hurricane CF air cleaner, the Hammer Performance CF air cleaner, and the American Sport Bike CF air cleaner, are all pretty much the same, although Aaron just changed the design of the hold down standoffs on the Hammer Performance one. But while they all look like the old Buell race air cleaner from the outside (same cover, same filter), the milled backplate on them is much improved from the old Buell stamped sheet backplate, which was horrible. The backplate on the new ones has four major improvements over the old Buell race air cleaner:
1) There is a perimeter step in the plate that locates the filter and helps it hold its shape and seal better.
2) The velocity ring is fully formed and milled into the plate, not just the cheap plastic ring that bolts into place
3) It's much stiffer so it seals better
4) The spacer is machined into the back instead of being a separate ring. One less place to leak, one less gasket to replace, one less disturbance to the airflow through the tube.

I've never had any issue riding the Buell Race air cleaner home in the rain, and I've been caught in some pretty intense downpours on my S3 with one. In the most serious of downpour for an extended period, you might start running a bit rich. And you might want to re-oil the K&N after an extended run through the rain. But it's not that big a deal really.

I will probably be making an order with you shortly Al. $300 for an intake is probably too rich for me but since I'm rebuilding the x1 I'm going to do some upgrades while in there.

I like the design but not a big fan of the CF cover. A plain black steel cover would suit me just fine.

Kicking around idea of screamin eagle sporty air cleaner as I'm not a huge fan of cf and forcewinder looks weird sometimes. Anyone do that?

Sporty air cleaner is on my M2, but it takes up too much knee room so I'm replacing it with a forcewinder.

Aaron at Hammer recently developed this air cleaner. Might be just the ticket for folks that want an offset oval but don't want CF. Should have the same or better flow than the improved race oval, but a little bit less tolerance to downpour. I don't have them up on the web site yet but will soon.

I just recently put the Hammer filter on my S2 and used an old sportster ham can cover I painted black, the filter plate is a really nice peice.

If one could take approximately the Hypercharger shell shape (lose the flaps) make it wider in the front, narrower at the back and use the front half of that air filter, we'd have something. That would fit my knee I mean. In the meantime, I use a Force clone. Notice how the Force idea is so popular now, even Screamin' Eagle makes them, Roland Sands makes them, K&N makes them... I guess you can't patent a shape?

I have the force racewinder in carbon which I like,had a hypercharger but until I found some good lock washers it kept vibrating loose, I have a forcewinder but never used it yet.i would like to see a rendering of jayvee's idea.

There are some pre-filters for k&n type filters which are often used for off-road or dusty conditions to extend the lift of the oiled cotton filter. They are water resistant and reduce the cleaning interval of the filter. You know, for those that are overly concerned with rain....

I remember a friend had the carbon on his bike and I hit my knee on it repeatedly which is why I never wanted one.

I put on a Force Winder over a thousand miles ago. I am concerned with the filtration ability of this filter. After about 600 miles I took the carb off and there was this black residue in the carb. I know I have over oiled it before and maybe under oiled on occasion. Which filter offers best filtration and airflow?

There is always some black residue in the intake tract and is rarely dependent on quality of external filtration, FI or carb alike.

In most cases the hamcam filters with K&Ns don't even bottleneck the bike's power so I doubt you will find a need for a better performing filter TBH. An American Sport Bike, NRHS, or Hammer Hamcam sized A/C is good for well over 100 HP.

The filter element in the aluminum air filter that I posted is the same one used by the Offset carbon fiber air cleaner, and the offset is the same. So it has slightly better knee clearance than the Buell Race Air cleaner because the CF part isn't there.
