Think "manpower". Parts storage. Nevermind the fact they have quite the workload already, what with trying to launch a brand new motorcycle company...

Well i did not read the review's as i've ridden Harleys for most of my life i'm 66yo now still Riding my m2 every chance i get.
But to try to explain what an X1 can do. a good friend that has owned real old iron head 4 speed sportsters since the 1970's & road raced Jap bikes since he left school. he is also a motorcycle mechanic. he got a new x1 in 02 was sponsored & raced it in formula extreme here in Australia he used to ride it about 500 mile to to some of the race tracks he raced in the series at, he would race the x1 for three day's then ride it 500mile home. only problem he told me he had was a broken belt, but because of his experience riding old iron head sportsters long distance the X1 would be easy.
nothing is perfect.

Also metal primary gasket (which I think Harley finally changed too). The paper ones were about 50/50 in terms of if they would seal or not (no matter how careful you were). The metal ones seal great and can be reused a couple times if you feel lucky.

And the same reason than Ford doesn't provide support for Chevy.

Harley owns everything "Buell".......lock,stock and barrel.

The legal entanglements of "supporting" HD owned ...... Yikes

This is the basic list of things to do to keep the tube frame Buells on the road.

1. Billet front motor mount (stock one is the factory V shaped one that can/will(?) break and cause nasty secondary issues)
$$$ You can do this, not needed though, I went back to stock set up and its fine.( too many Willies and not enough checking bolts. One got loose. 27k on original Isolator too. $$$
2. XB rocker box with catch can conversion (changes how the motor breaths/vents - much better design)
$$Another mis conception. This doesn't need done either. . Drill oil return hole a little bigger and take care install new Breather rubbers. Google it, I think it was drill 1/8" bit. If Rubber looks old , weird or don't set right replace them. At 4k with cover gaskets I replaced these and the oil dripping was improved a lot and given some time the breathers sealed great. What actually helps MORE is a polished venture on the inlet. $$
3. Updated rocker box gaskets - stock ones were paper and WILL leak)

4. Exhaust header updated “Y” mount (stock one is an "L" design that doesn't carry load well, transfers load back to head when the rubber grommet goes bad)
5. Updated hardened oil pump drive gear (stock one is too soft and wears out around 30K miles)
6. Updated primary chain tensioner (stock one BAD, breaks and gets lodged in your primary chain and makes a very expensive crunching noise - yep learned that one the hard way)
7. Proper install of exhaust - if installed incorrectly, poor technique, sets up a bad load distribution and transfers load back to head - breaks exhaust header bolts in head) I have had these off a few times and do not see any magic behind installing these. I do have new studs for the heads due to age next time they are off.
8. Proper tension on final drive belt (most service centers set these way to tight...puts bad load on output shaft and destroys bearings)
9. Personal choice – replace stock push rod tube assemblies with one piece billet base and collapsible push rod tubes (use stock push rods) while you are replacing oil pump drive gear, the stock push rod tubes can be a little tricky to re-install leak free.
$$ I don't agree with number nine but all the other stuff we need to make sure gets done as they are needed updates. $$

Finally after 27k miles and a virtual First Owner. The attitude towards these bikes is amazing. They are !! Hot Rods !! and have to be treated as such. You can mess with the ECM if you don't know what your doing and do not double check gas flows and mixtures.

10. Replace the intake gaskets every 2-3 years.
11. Have the Fuel Injectors cleaned every 5 and consider replacing sensors every five years. They are more sensitive on a motorcycle.

Other than that, the bashers can eat Buells exh fumes. We own the corners : )

Those reviews are pretty old, and done by people who might be better off with an 'appliance' like a Honda. Tube frames I guess require more engagement than a bike expected to be traded in every few years.
