Yup I bought a 04-06 1200 motor all excited thinking it was a drop and go. The sad thing is I knew to look at the engine mounts to help determine if it was the right one. since I have been looking/staring at it I noticed only 3 differences in the motors. my wonder is the entire motor different in tiny ways or just the crank case. Since I plan on rebuilding the one I have it would be nice to use the top end of this and possibly tranny as well... my top end has been raced with no filter for 2 years and 2nd gear is shot to shit. any input would be awesome. Thanks...

top end is usable backwards.. same with cams.. The issue comes in the other way as the oil squirters under the pistons hit the earlier model pistons

Not sure on gearbox as it changed a lot with the '04's..

not sure with crank, from what I can find out you should be able to use it but will have to modify it or the cases as from the information I've been able to gather there's a slight difference in width... I haven't tried the crank swap yet, so can't confirm

Thank you for that. I am going to sell the lower case complete with tranny to ensure no headache in the gearbox. After Googling a while I came across a few good reads so it also looks like a rocker box conversion are in order before modding. I think I am going to get the baker lower ratio gears 1-3. What do you think I could get away with a moderate boosting. I have thought about dropping compression but don't want to loose power to gain power I am thinking around 15 lbs or so.

turbo introduces a whole new set of challenges..

Did some work on a turbo Hyabusa for a customer years back and the issue he had was trying to regulate fuel with only a Power Commander. The Power Commander worked off the stock MAP sensor which only measured negative pressure, not positive... so they were guessing fuel delivery... I suggested they go with a better management system but they stuck with it and blew pistons...


How are you managing fuel ??

I am exploring that avenue as we speak. I currently use ecmspy and datalogg but I am looking into other systems to install a map sensor along with a set of decent widebands. The o2 sensors I will run by themselves but the tricky shift is finding a way to add a map sensor...

The 'cheater' way to do manifold VS fuel pressure is to run a manifold line to the top of the fuel pressure regulator. But like everything else, YMMV.

I like being able to monitor and control as necessary so cheating won't be a option. I am still researching the map sensor. My project is at a stand still until I get a decent elec boost controller and a way to read the manifold pressure.
