Considering I found her bike priced at 2600 and offered 2000 I don't think it's a low ball. If I offered 1500 that would be a lowball

UPDATE... a very nice BWB member Lynrd has made me aware of a basket case S3T. well lucky for me i can turn a wrench so i MAY jump on it but Ive been given a near 2 week "think about it" period.

The S3/T is what made me love Buell.

If i go ahead and purchase this bike i will need a engine. stock sporty if i have to. I would also like a alloy swing arm

As someone who sells for a living...nearly 30% off asking price is a lowball.

Maybe I'm burned out on selling, but when someone asks what my "bottom dollar" is, or expects a negotiation for an item they haven't even laid eyes on...it makes me want to strangle them. There's a price tag on the item for a reason, and it's not a number the seller picks at random. If you want to pay 30% less...find a different item.

I'm always amazed by customers who offer me lowball amounts. When I say "I can't sell you this item for that, but if that's your price range look at items X Y and Z", they get all and start crying "that's not what I WANT...I want the FIRST item, but for MY price, because X Y and Z are crap (even though that's what puts them in my price range)".

But like I said...maybe I'm burned out on people who want everything for nothing.

Yeah I get it. I low balled her. 40k miles with pretty much zero maintenance records or knowledge beside oil changes with a previous parking lot tip over and repaint. No engine mount replacement.

I don't know about you but 40k I'd be looking at the top end. And suspension

No_sprk, I don't think your offer was out of line, that is what negotiating is for. No point in actually looking at it if you cant get it for what you want to spend. If they already dropped it as much as you first posted, there is no telling what they might have as their bottom dollar.

I've seen it and talked to him. It's nice. I was trying trade him a extra chevy pickup I have and he may go for it. I need to clean it up. New bench seat. Rear bumper. Etc. I sent him a few pics so far but our schedules and 110 mile distance has put a damper on things.

40,000 miles is pretty much nicely broken in for the top end.
Other stuff breaks but assuming it has a good air filter on it and an oil change every 5000 miles, its top end shouldn't be worn out.

Whatever you get just ride and smile. Its hard to kill one of these motors, but if something does break its easy to get parts.

The ricer crowd is going to tell you Buells are crap. The HD crowd is going to tell you Buells are crap. Buell owners and riders are going to tell you the truth.

I've never owned a Harley Davidson I know the Sportster engines are reliable but I have no idea what the reliability is when you pump up the heads and compression to make it a Buell engine. I know the bottom ends are pretty bulletproof

Plenty reliable. Mine has over 50,000 and runs like new. LaFayette has well over 100,000 on his S3 and has never removed the heads. I know one NRHS customer from XLForum that has a hot 1250 with 98 RWHP (T-storm Buells run about 85 RWHP) and he has 280,000 on the stock bottom end!

fix the basics and they last a long time!

1) XB rocker box conversion with catch can
2) upgraded rocker box 1 piece gaskets
3) oil pump drive gear
4) I like to put them back together with billet one piece bases & collapsible push rod tubes and stock push rods for a leak proof push rod tube assembly (made by zippers and sold through NRHS or zippers)
5) Primary chain tensioner
6) proper tension on primary chain
7) proper tension on final drive belt
8) front motor mount with new bolts
9) updated front exhaust hangar
10) proper installation of exhaust header/muffler

and not a necessity but...get rid of the boomerang shifter set up any way you can.....

all of these are a one day job, if done together, and they all can feed into each other so your not duplicating maintenance, then they will almost last forever!

I have not yet been stranded by one of my Buells that has that list done to it, and my collection includes 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002.....Oh Man I've got missing years...1997, 2000 and 2001....(uh oh, it goes poorly from here..)

the most work I have to do to one of these bikes is when I "rescue" one or buy a used one from someone not aware of this forum and I am taking care of things that should have already been done!

these things are just great fun!!!

jolly, thank you for the reply. im still new to buells and HDs so im very interested in soaking up knowledge of them both.

seems like the OEM crankcase breathing passages are too narrow. maybe ok for a stock sporty?

for such a well sorted engine im surprised harley let something so simple as a oil pump gear be made to the accountants specs. i guess the engine testing is no where near automotive companies.

so im guessing these pushrod tubes are spring assisted too? or a just move them up and lock them in with that chrome piece?

Sweet bike and what looks to be a great deal, though hard to tell since he didn't include pics of the other side. Looks like a Buell race muffler with a 2.5" 90* elbow added, USD forks/triples, S1 tail section and seat, Banke shifter. Also looks like an EBC rotor. Very well sorted bike it seems.

That is an S1 solo tail and they do not interchange with the M2 frame. Look under that tail and make sure they did the proper cut/welding of the S1 sub-frame for that to fit.

And +1 to what Jolly said. Although I would argue the importance so much of the XB rocker boxes. I have had no issues with the stock ones and a catch can.

And one thing to add to Jolly's list is the crank seal if you have to pop the primary cover off. Even if it is low mileage, these bikes are getting old and so is that single lip rubber on that seal. Better to do before if gets all over your rear tire.

Just enough changes / upgrades to make one think that may really be an S1. It's not easy to put an S1 tail on a M2 frame, and its got USD forks, but no tach!
Good price!

can anyone tell if those are the old WP forks or newer SHOWA units?

i love the look of it. yes as close to a s1 as you can get. besides a tach?

It has an integrated frame brace, so either way the frame has been welded on. The frame brace and the T-storm heads make me think it really is an M2.

It is a '99 M2( the plastic single gauge pod and the peg relocators give it away). It does have a conversion to the S1 tail and like said above I would make sure it was done correctly..

Thanks for the info dave. It's hard for me to pick between a m2 and s3.. I also love BMW k-bikes and may want a m2 for fun around town and the twisties and keep a old k100rt for soaking up endless miles...

Or just buy two basket case s1/s3 bikes and go with it
