I bought my S1 new in '97. I had just turned 45 and was experiencing my midlife crisis. Upon purchase I had the ProSeries kit put in. After much study done by some Buell savvy mechanics using a variety of headers, ignitions and airboxes, it was found that among all performance options. The ProSeries was the best performance modification short of boring and stroking. It was also discovered that removing the muffler did not seem to degrade performance.
Having been riding old shovelhead choppers up until that time, I was delighted that I could run a straightpipe !!!!
I still have it and ride it regularly. If you have done the math, yes, I am 62 years old.
I have been rambling off point. I mean to say congratulation on your purchase. Your Buell looks good to me. Even the crazy yellow. Treat it right and it should serve you well. I currently have almost 65k miles without any major work. Just tires and fluids, still on the original clutch and belt. That does not sound like much for 17 years but life's obligations and living close to taverns meant I rarely went for long rides.
As I get older I find riding a little difficult. I am only 5'5" 150lb. Touching the ground and holding it up on canted surfaces is sometimes a bitch. Especially when leaving the tavern. I am going to try and lower it a few inches. It will probably effect handing a bit. But hot rodding on the twisties is not high on my list now days. However if by lowering causes it to be too treacherous to ride, I will go back to original.
If anyone is interested in how this turns out I will gladly do a posting.
Thanks for letting an old man in.

Moderator: Can you put "enters" at the end of each of the above pictures? Some folks hate scrolling back and forth to read the text...

BTW, nice S1!

The more I learn about the Buell models, the more I realise I know nothing.

Now I'm confused about 'Solo' tails :-). Is a solo tail different to a standard tail, or are solo tails merely a solo seat on a standard tail with the pegs removed and those 'thingies' added?

Two models of the S1 produced in 1998 off the single (solo) and the "twin tail" (dual) seat versions.

There was also a P&A kit to convert a single to a dual.

Bikes produced as "twin tail" were noted "DUAL" on their built sheets.

Nice S1W!!

I've got and S1W with the twin tail and a Corbin seat. For a brief while my wife had a 97 S1 with the solo seat. I rode her bike twice. I found the solo seat not at all comfortable... The Corbin is "bearable", but not all that comfortable either...

Gary, the solo tail is the standard tail and any seat that fits it as far as I know.

"Bought a new car and my old one took a dump so selling this to fix my old car and sell that."

If he added the baker kit and scorpion clutch, that's nearly $800 alone, so I doubt he's making a ton of profit on this even though I think he did the work himself. Most people wouldn't add parts of that quality to a bike they plan on selling. Either way $4000 is still a pretty reasonable price all things considered.

I have to throw my hat into this ring as it appears the S1 I purchased a few months back comes up as a dual via the VIN, but carries the solo tail. Bike only has 7300 on it so it must have been converted to the solo nearly when new. What year did they start powder coating frames also? My '01 M2 frame was far better quality than the frame paint on this '98. My VIN is: 4MZSS11J7W3201302

" What year did they start powder coating frames also?"

I believe all Buell frames were powder coated. They were done by Classic Coatings in Sheboygan, WI (if I'm not mistaken).

alright so here's what's going on. i truly wish i could keep this and paint it back to the had no intentions of selling it anytime soon like phelan said i wouldnt have put the money into it if i knew what the future had in store. with that said i still may keep if i can get the MINI fixed here soon but im looking at crazy money to get it back on the road. supercharger took a dump on me, causing the supercharger driven water pump to fail which then overheated the engine and possibly took out my headgasket, low compression on cylinder #1. so now i need a new SC, Water pump, possibly a headgasket and head before i can sell her. : (

I'm not looking to get a profit on this bike just get what i put into it and hopefully even out in the end(hopefully). if the price isn't right make me an offer? I'm a nice guy i wont be offended by anything. 4k is just a starting price.

other than the bubbled spots on the gas tank there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. i've fixed every issue it had when i got it and then some reliability upgrades just to make it a real solid bike to enjoy. bought a new primary chain gasket for it today since i've pulled the primary a few times since i bought the last one. So I'm still putting money into it as we speak. also looking for a stock taillight bracket and good condition twin tail seat. I'm about 50/50 on selling it. if a Legitimate offer comes, it's sold, as i have the car to take care of. however, ill be kicking myself later for doing so. she looks so good in my garage
