Until 2002, I had ridden Harleys, dirt bikes, and an old cb200. My dad had bought a millenium x1, rode it a few months, and decided he was too old and laid back for the beast. I bought it, and 5 years later parted it out (like an idiot).

Browsing around, found a millenium a few hours away for stupid cheap. It's got some cosmetic issues, but it is a solid rider. Runs great, and its got some goodies.

1. Race exhaust
2. Storz steering dampener

I'm pretty sure I saved it from being chopped up. I love love love it. It's like meeting your first love again after 12 years apart. I'm smitten with this girl. Selling my BMW, and getting the millenium falcon ready to sit next to a westwind.(As soon as the house closes)

Our first X1 was a 99 Carbon

Looking to replace it this month.

GL with the restoration

I changed the oil and filter, and then I took her out for a 100 mile sprint through the mountains. Between the two I found a few bad things:

1. I need the rubber grommets that the torx bits screw into to that hold the breadboxes on.

2. I need the front exhaust mount rubber bushing, or a way to DIY a proper fix. I'm not ready to buy an updated bracket just yet.

3. I need a good resource in which to locate these things at the same place

a. Intake manifold wrench
b. Intake manifold/carb gasket kit
c. Crankcase seal.

Yes, the bike is dripping a bit of oil out of the trans vent while riding. I was careful to pre-scrub the left before pulling her hard left for some switchbacks.

It is not very happy in the low revs with quick throttle inputs.

It pops pretty good on decel.

Anyone have inputs for where to acquire? Is there a driver that can be acquired that will install the crank seal at the right depth?

Last time I bought the exhaust rubber isolator for the old mount was from Twin in Europe, I had bought a few extras and sold them here to offset the freight cost some though.

@BlkS1l, where is Twin in Europe, website wise?

@ Lakes, I didn't see the crank seal, airbox seal, or tool at asb

I found a DIY crankcase installation tool. Also looked in the service manual, it instructs to press the seal until it makes contact with the crank. Everyone I've talked to and everywhere I've read has said to be careful not to install it too deeply. These sound like conflicting statements, do they not? How do I set the depth?

I had one made from measurements I found in the knowledge vault. If you know someone with a lathe it is not that big of a deal to make.

You don't want the crank bearings to be rubbing on the seal, or they will cut through it in about 4131 miles. Or so I hear. ; )

You can make your own even simpler tool with a dowel rod. Cut a shoulder in the end corresponding with the depth you want to seat, and let that rest on the cases while the taller bit seats the seal. It basically just keeps you from seating too deeply.

Ordered all the primary side gaskets and locking bar from asb. eBay for the intake parts. I guess I am going to attempt to fabricate the front rubber mount, since I couldn't find it on twincycles. The front sprocket nut- what size is it?

Got everything apart. I carefully measured how deep the seal was pressed. Looks like it is all but flush, is it not? Does the side that protrudes go inwards toward the bearing? Because that is the way it came out....

I made a spacer to press it using a motion pro fork oil gauge cap and a roll of electric tape.

Going to continue the work tomorrow.

Oh yeah, turns out my starter gasket is leaking. Along with my crank seal (slight), and a bad oil line.

Might as well knock it all out now, right?

Yup, get it done while you're in there. Clean up the rubber grommet for the stator wire real good and put some black RTV on there too, those can also get a bit leaky.

If you turn and view the seal from the edge, one spring is exposed and one is hidden from view. The exposed spring side goes inward, towards the flywheels.
Flush or very close to flush will work for the installation depth.

Progress:

1. Crank seal installed. (American Sport Bike)

2. Red loctite and proper torque on fasteners

3. Black RTV applied to grommet

4. Starter gasket replaced (OEM) (NOTE: Previously replaced by someone that cut the seal on the top with a cutoff wheel to make room to slip it in without pulling exhaust. No silicone was applied over that hole). Hmmm.

5. Replaced neutral switch (NOTE: Previously 'fixed' by someone applying superglue to the plug. Had to scrape out the crud, and applied lithium grease).

6.Installed updated exhaust "Y" hangar (USED).

7.Installed primary cover with new gasket, shifter gasket, and a new primary chain tensioner (American Sport Bike).

8.Installed new exhaust gaskets (OEM)

9.Installed new intake seals (James)

Upon completion of the exhaust hangar, I hit a few snags.

When I went to re-install the clutch cable, the cable bolt broke in half before I even put torque on it.

Anyone know the HD part number?

Additionally, I didn't realize I needed a VR bracket. Anyone know that part number?

Thanks a million!

I'm taking my time, and hoping for a trouble free ride when I'm done.

Next points to hit

a. VR connectors
b. Oil line replacement
c. TPS reset

Strange. I replaced my starter without having to pull the exhaust. That was when I still had the stock exhaust too.

I'm just speculating at this point.... It was definitely cut. I am going to try to use my xb parts to fabricate a regulator mount. It makes me want to figure out how to use my xb oil cooler on my x1... I need to search on other people's projects, as I am sure it has been done before.

Swapped the XB12S clutch cable over, very close to exact, if not exact.

I ordered the VR bracket C0333.01A1 : BRACKET REGULATOR from buellster.

I had to watch the daughter today, so I only got a few minutes to tinker.

Tomorrow, I'm going to start ripping the oil lines out of it.

Bike is complete, with the exception of it is due for a good washing.

So that makes a nice grocery list of maintenance...

1. Intake seals
2. Exhaust seals
3. Crank seal
4. Stator grommet
5. Starter gasket
6. Primary gasket
7. Shifter shaft seal
8. Updated exhaust hanger and regulator mount
9. New oil lines.
10. Fabricated oil catch can
11. New clutch cable
11. New neutral switch

I finally get to test ride this evening.

Next project: brakes. Flush and replace rear line.

Maybe this winter I will have time to install my nhrs 1250 kit and stage 2 xb heads. That'll make for some smiles!
