So, I tried to mow grass when I got home from work. Made 3 passes...armageddon rain.

Bag the mowing.

Go to the garage. M2 is on the lift waiting for a jetting tweak. Left the carb on the bike, dropped the bowl, pulled the main jet and tube assembly, pulled the idle jet. Got a phone call. Using my bluetooth so I could put the phone on a windowsill and get signal, I debated (while talking) keep the idle jet...drop a step...keep it...drop it...ended up keeping it. Reinstalled it.

Still talking...

Put the bowl back on. Tightened the four bolts. Opened the petcock to check for gasket leaks. Pulled the choke. Started the bike. Started right up, idled fine, purring like a kitten.

Sharp readers...will notice the missing step thus far.

Yep. I looked down on the lift, and there amidst my tools...was the main jet and tube assembly.

Bike purring away contentedly.

Hm.

So apparently a CV40 will start, run, and idle just fine...with NO MAIN JET INSTALLED.

Neat.

Shut the fuel back off, let the bike drain the bowl, took it apart AGAIN and installed the new main jet and tube assembly. Re-reassembled, re-opened the valve, re-started the bike, still purring like a kitten, still not leaking any fuel.

Never a dull moment. I either need to do MORE work on bikes to stay in practice...or just quit altogether before I break something or kill myself!

Sounds awfully familiar to my night last night.

Yesterday I put my old CV on my brother's FXD because his carb was shot and I upgraded to a Mikuni. On his old carb, the pin that holds the float in place was way loose because the casing had been walleyed out, most likely because of a broken carb support bracket (which I repaired by welding and sanding it).

First I switch the main jets and reinstall the carb, only to have it not run right and also dump gas out the overflow. Then I take it off again and clean the float and reinstall it, running it again. THEN I realize I forgot to change the pilot jet, so I take it off AGAIN and change the pilot, and finally reinstall it. What a night.

I'm just amazed (well...first at my STUPIDITY) that the carb/bike started and idled so perfectly...with major parts NOT INSTALLED.

What's the line from Doc Hollywood? "There's always some stuff left over when I put 'em back together...".

not sure about a CV carb but on a Holley for a car/truck the idle circuit is separate from the main jet circuit i.e. if it's like that I bet if you'd have blipped the throttle something would have happened lol

I discovered long ago I can't talk and do anything technical, I have to stop what I'm doing.
