I seen a pic of a nice '00 X1 in the classifieds and noticed how nice and clean the chin spoiler looked without the linkage being in the way. It had the boomerang shifter on it of course. Is there any disadvantage to switching to that style of shifter? Is the arm off the foot peg weak and flimsy? Do you have to move the toe peg more to shift?

TIA, MM

YES. A little sloppy, and catches pant legs. Pain in the rear. Don't do it.

edit- There's nothing wrong with a boomerang shifter. If you want, I will kindly send you mine in exchange for your later style : D.

I prefer the boomarang.
It pivots on the same axis as the peg.
Eats shoes less.
It you wear a suit like me, it doesn't catch your leg.
Every 8,000 miles, replace the plastic thingy and grease it to make it pivot better.

If you already have the newer flavor, I wouldn't bother retrofitting it though.

After "i" up-dated my shifter on my S3T, the "BOOMERANG" went on my BLAST where it works just fine !!!

I like the boomerang simply b'cz it's more crash-resistant

tho' the shifting's mebbe less precise,
a toe tab in the tankbag's all I've ever needed to repair a tip-over.....

Mostly cons for the boomerang in my experience - In the way (nearly permanent sore spot on the inside of my left shin bone for years), sloppy-loose, less leverage, and there's a lot more of it.

Updated shifter is smaller and better in general, even if you find it less visually appealing.

Am so glad I got rid of it thanks to the group buy of the Banke shifter kit.

With the 'boomerang' version, no matter how I tried to tighten/loosen/adjust the linkages, I often mis-shifts and neutral was hard to find. After the change over, as long as I keep the clutch adjusted and the fluid level up, finding neutral is no problem and mis-shifts are gone.

I like the 02 up shift i took the boomerang off. but i did not give it a lot of thought. but main reason i like the 02 up is it allowed me to reverse the shift. like i have one up four down & like it. i think just a billet shift across the derby cover would work even better for me.

Hate the stock shifter, its sloppy! I have 5 tube frame bikes and all of them have the boomerang shifter assembly removed and stuck in a box...using billet set-up on each bike. Much better both form and function, very nice crisp solid shifts.

I just bought a newer x1 straight shift and will be changing out my boomerang this week. I hope it works as good as you guys say I know that it's easier to find the q spot than it is to find neutral.

Well then I guess function is better than looks. I don't have the stock set up on mine either. I modified a steel brake lever and then ran a shift rod up to the pivot point. But I still have that cluster of linkage in the way of the spoiler. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Here's my setup now. There's no slop or play just a lot of linkage in front of the spoiler.

I just tried putting on the 01 shifter and I can't figure it out. I have two spacers and the fairing bolt. But it doesn't seem like the bolt is long enough. Maybe I have the spacers wrong. Any ideas?

45 is the inner spacer, 46 is outer. 44's are your bushings inside the shifter, either plastic or bronze.

I have seen other set ups about the same. The 90 deg at the pivot is going to be swapped out with a 1 piece aluminum. It maybe over engineered but I haven't missed a shift yet.

I must have the wrong bolt. The one that came with the shifter is the same size as the one that holds the fairing on. I must have got the wrong bolt. I'll have to run to Lowes and get another one. Thanks for the picture.

Found another angle of spoiler. Parts catalog calls for 5/16-18x4.75".
