My 2001 started running lousy! Boogin and loosing power. I checked trouble codes and got a #16 has any one dealt with this issue? The manual wants me to hook up a break out box and check voltages here and their, but am asking for possible solutions. I do not own a breakout box.....

I don't have a breakout box but if there is any chance you think it's your ignition module I've take the one if my bike and ship it out to you as a loaner for trouble shooting. Let me know and I'll get it in the mail this week ! With as much as you've helped me in the past I'll pay for all shipping back and forth. My X1 can sit in the corner for a bit while you borrow the module while I tidy up a few things on it.

Let me know !

Where is the ignition module? Do you mean the ignition switch?

Code #16 shows as 'Battery voltage out of limits', so a lot can be done with a multimeter.

First, check your battery voltage, engine off. Should be in the 12.5V range. If not, charge it and have it load tested. The most likely suspect if it is over 3yrs old.

Battery checked, start the engine and check the voltage across the terminals with the engine at 2500rpm or so. The voltage should be in the 13.5-14.5 range. If not, there is a problem with either the voltage regulator or the alternator.

Of course, check the battery cables and confirm the connections are clean and tight.

Hope this helps, Dave

Yep that thing.... The brain box.... Have one I can pull for you if it ends up being something you want to use as part of your trouble shooting.

Thanks much for the info. Helps a lot to be able to say the basic electrical system is good.

The service manual states the ECU measures the system voltage at pin 1 of the black connector, the grey wire. That circuit is grounded via pin 2. The wire is fed from the ign fuse to the ign relay, and on to the ECU.

So, there may be a corrosion issue at the fuse, and one at the relay. Also, the relay may be in a 'pre-fail' mode. Removing/installing the two 4-5 times, then a light coat of dielectric should take care of the corrosion, if present. Also consider replacing the relay.

Of particular note, the relay depends on proper functioning of the starter interlock circuit. Have you bypassed the sidestand switch? If not, that is where I would start.

Hope this helps, Dave. And please let us know how it goes. I'm sure the situation can be solved.

Yes I did that too checked for corrosion. The bike starts but hesitates when twisting the throttle. More ideas?

To review, you are comfortable that the battery is good, as are the battery cables. Same with the charging system. You are also confident in the relay, the fuse, and the sidestand switch. Pretty much covers this part of the system, meaning the error code issue has been solved, depending on what you checked/change. Or, it means the error code was a one-time anomaly.

If the TPS has been re-set, and If the plugs, fuel filter, ect are all good, and the problems persist . . . .

Then I'm with Bluzm2 on the engine temp sensor is faulty. They can go bad or shift calibration and cause running problems, without showing a Trouble Code 14. Usually when that happens, multiple codes show along with crappy running, instead of just one code. I have had that happen.

If you fire up ECM Spy, you will see that the ETS value doesn't change or is way off.
A bad one can cause REALLY odd symptoms.
