Thinking about getting one. $1500, 9k miles. Mecahnically sound, starts an runs well. Has sat outside for a while. Brightwork/rubber/plastic will need freshening or replacement. Anything special about the molten orange/nuc blue combo? A few spots on the frame are rashed and it seems color match is an issue for touchup from reading on here. I've always though this was a very pretty bike, but never thought about purchase until saw this one.

What do you think? Worth the risk? BTW, I have tried to post pics and no matter how small I make them, I keep getting "exceeds maximum" msg...

Looks nice, pre-recall shock. Good price for 9K miles, for a generally clean bike that's 16 years old.

For that price I would say buy it! It's below market value... One of the members here has had luck with that color frame, just did an S2 frame in that color... Not sure if it was a perfect match (Vince, thoughts?) but if the frame is really bad, do a frame off and re powdercoat it and you don't have to worry about the difference.

Where is the bike?? If you don't buy it I would VERY possibly be interested!!

One of my favorite color combinations, only available on the S1 for one year. The nice thing about the frame is that only Nuclear Blue frames were powder coated. Good deal, it does have the original shock, which is great for display, but I would replace with the later model recall or some other replacement for riding.

That's a great deal especially if there's not much wrong with it. I got my S1 recently for $2500 and thought that was a heck of deal, so ya' done good for that price. Cool color scheme too, definitely like the orange purple frame combo.

Good point on the powder coat Tom, I've had good luck buffing my frame's finish back to a shine on some hazy spots over the years.

Screaming deal really, unless the motor's blown you prolly oughta get it. If I could find one locally at that price I'd try to find a way to make it happen.

Michael, glad it all made it to you okay.

Thanks for the input guys! The frame paint is worn in 2 spots (only one noticeable) and could be brought back to 90% with a carful touchup? if one existed. The engine and most of the brightwork will clean with some elbow grease. The black parts will rattle-can just fine. The wheels appear to be in good shape with just some tape residue from weights. The clip-ons and all the hardware on them need restoration/replacement. I think I can do a presentable rider for $500 and a showable bike for $2k. The motor and carbs have some factory upgrades and aftermarkets stuff. Apparently it's high HP for what it is (I don't have the details), but the current owner rescued it for the engine to use in a chopper….then decided not to. He is a mechanic at a local custom HD shop and I wonder why the change of heart??? It runs well and I was offered a test ride, but declined d/t no gear with me (was with wife in SUV).

Anyway, I think a frame-off resto would be $2K and the bike would be amazing. Again, $500 to polish it up and just ride…. unless something bad lurking.

What's gonna happen if I keep the original rear shock? It's cool looking : )

Keep the shock. If it leaks, send it to Racetech. I've ridden my S2 two-up across the continent with the stock shock (rebuilt.)

nuke blue frame were put on bikes near the production year end. So they are special that way. the body color is not special, could have been anything.

the nuc blue/purple wheels/frame are cool. If I could find a close paint to touch it up in the one bad spot, then rather just do that.

This appears to be the most active Buell board? Thanks for the help!

The problem with the WP shock was not the same leaking issue as with the later shocks. The problem as I understand it was that one end of the shock was pressed on aluminum and over time it could come off the end. To complicate this, not all WP shocks are the same, some have welded on eyelets. As a safety issue, I would be careful using the original WP. The S2 WP is slightly different (I have both) and I don't know if they experienced the same failures.

I had a welded on original shock gone through by linder engineering came off the race shelf so I was told. Never had an issue.

i took a risk on mine 5 or so years ago. I still havent driven a bike with the same personality. Theirs just something about it (especially when you make it your own) that just no other bike can fulfill. Ive driven faster bikes, more nimble bikes, newer or more refined bikes.

But its something about the raw grunt, the vibration of a big twin, and the experience i havent found anywhere else.

Take the risk, you wont be dissatisfied.

Err, Buell ownership can be had by anyone, enjoyment of that though - well, you've got to love how visceral the whole experience is, including wrenching your own bike.

This board is fairly active, there's a Buell XB forum that's fairly active as well. We tend to try and treat each other as if we may share a drink or burger next weekend, since you never know who you may need advice from here...

Pretty cool garage filler you've got there!

If the bike still has the original shock then it probably haasn't had any of the other (numerous) recalls done either.

It would be worth checking that these can still be done.

Also I would not use that original shock. There is a very good reason why they were recalled and changed to Showa shocks, which has been gone into ad nauseum here before now : )

I'd be interested too, if it is near San Angelo, that shouldn't be too far away.

Keep the shock-- the recall was a result of maybe one shock failing under extreme usage by a motojournalist or such IIRC. Had mine for years.

and when I say "decided to pass on it", you can read that as "took to long to decide and it was gone when I went back, but I don't really have time to restore a bike right now, so it's OK" :-)
