Hey Buell brothers, have a problem that I hope isn't bad, anyway, bought a '97 S1 lightning, was riding it back, started to leak oil, found out that a rocker cover allen screw/bolt had rattled out, was out in the middle of nowhere, had no choice but it ride it another 150 miles until I got home. Bought bolt and a box gasket set. Finally had time, put the bolt in yesterday to take down to wash off the oil, started up ok, put in gear, but heard some rattling, I think in the rocker area where the bolt came out, then it was back firing a little...so my next step is to put new gasket in...any thoughts or comments on this...thanks brothers. FYI, we also have a '99 X1 that screams...

Your account is a little hard to follow.

you lost a bolt inside the motor?
I presume that you found it and removed it
if not you need to locate it asap presuming the thing is not running around inside the rocker box - cam chest / lifter gallery

[ CRINGE ]

if the bolt is external, and you washed the bike and got some backfiring perhaps water some where you may not want it.

the leaking rattling not knowing where the bolt came out is ominous..

rocker box gaskets are a rite of passage on these tubers good luck and good hunting on the rattle other wise.....

Sounds like the bolt may be still on the bike somewhere but not inside the motor. Unless the bolt broke it can't fall inside the motor. It COULD fall in the cavity above the center of the head though. The backfiring is likely water sucked in from the air filter if you power-washed it. Actually depending on the rattle, you may just be hearing extra valve train noise from a cool motor and hot oil.

May be I read it wrong but I thought he said the allen screw on the top of the rocker cover had fallen off. Rattling sound might be totally unrelated.

Gotta ask. Did you check the oil level while up to temp and add oil if needed after the 150 mile ride with oil leaking. If not the rattling you hear might be lack of oil flowing through the valve train.

I just recently had the same thing happen and rode about the same distance. The oil leak was very minimal, about two or three teaspoons. However, depending on which bolt was gone I think you could have lost more oil than I did.

Thanks for all replys...as far as the bolt, it was the small allen screw with the felt gasket that rattled out. I just took off the top cover and was trying to take the middle piece off with the umbrella gasket...if I'm not mistaken, I read, in order for it to clear, I have to raise the motor a bit...if so, I see the top two bolts to the motor and I think a bottom one, gonna look at the manual and see, but still lacking one allen screw, still have the the regular one though, gonna work on this afternoon and try and complete. As far as the noise, I think Phelan's post is hopefully what is going on. Thanks for all the help...what about the, raising of the motor to get that middle gasket in ???
