I just sourced a '96 S1 out of Arizona. It has had one owner except for the first 23 miles which were put on the bike in Idaho before being shipped by HD to the now previous owner in AZ.

It has black (or grey?) tank decals, apparently from new, and which "began to fade almost immediately." The owner said he decided to keep it original as suggested by his dealership, so the only upgrade it has had is the swingarm, although it does have a Showa shock.

I think the bike may be 'Snap Red'?, but I am waiting for VIN# details before I can verify that and the service history, and whether it is a '97 built in '96.

I would post a photo if only I could master the uploading.

I can't yet work out the shock 'thing' with S1's, or the number of swingarm recalls. My yellow '96 has the original white coil shock and swingarm and black fibreglass hugger, this bike has a Showa shock but has only had a swingarm upgrade, and it has a C/F hugger.

Were there two swingarm recalls and two shock recalls?

Any light anyone can shed on these 'mysteries to me' would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary, as far as the shock recalls, Al at American Sportbike has a good image of the two shock recalls. http://www.americansportbike.com/images/Shock_abso rbers.jpg It is found as a link on the page for the Penske Shock that he sells for the S1.

Thank you both, that picture is very helpful. From the pictures I have of the bike, it looks as though it has the 2nd recall 14.7" Showa.

Does anyone know about the 'Black' decals on S1's? I've never seen it before.

Normally, red Buells of the era had white "Buell" lettering with black or charcoal "American Motorcycles".

Share a photo or 3 of the bike...

I am not familiar with what you describe.

Please, as Joe suggested, post pics.

I'd like to see what it is you speak of.

Now if it were High Voltage Yellow that was being discussed...

After looking at my shock, I think I have the 14.5" revision 3 on my S2T. I gotta say.. It just works. I hit big bumps on the highway every so often on my way to work, and it is solid. The usual quick bound and rebound, done. No bouncy ball effect like the other Showas I've had (they leaked too).

They ALL work...if you adjust them properly ; )

(until they leak...)

Let it wander Jolly, I don't care . I believe the High Voltage was only '96.

1313, my recently arrived S1 is High Voltage Yellow and has BUELL in white with American Motorcycles in grey.

I can't work out how to upload photos 'cos I'm stupid. I wonder if I send one to Phelan if he'd be kind enough to post it for me? I'll ping Ross.

(The red S1 has a leaking fork seal which will be obvious.)

Lastly, how soon after S1 production did the fibreglass hugger become C/F?

Thanks for all the responses. Big help.

That is correct.

The hugger started carbon fiber. Had a clear finish in 1996 and a Vy-lon finish in 1997.

Uh Oh! Now I'm all confused again.

My Dec'95 build #150 has a black textured-finish hugger. Maybe it isn't so original, and I'll have to go hunting for a C/F one.

You have a carbon fiber one.

:-)

We just couldn't make a finish that was worth a shit so it go a layer of Vy-Lon plastered over it.

Thank you very much Ross!

Not a clear shot of the decals but the best I have.

Is that Snap Red as I 'm guessing it is?

Gary, looks a little darker than snap red to me, but it could just be the lighting. Does it look like this in sunlight?

It is still in LA Ross.

I've never seen it apart from that picture and 3 others.

Was Canyon Red an S1 colour?

I was going to suggest that it has been repainted it appears darker and the logo appears to have been painted on or cleared over. The logo also looks like it is not in the same location but yhis could all be lighting.
