Hey guys, my rear shock reservoir drips a drop or two of oil on the garage floor overnight. What is my best course of action? Is this an easy fix, in need of complete rebuild or should I look for a used complete shock to replace it? Looking for the cheapest option. It's the latest recall (3rd gen) shock if that makes any difference. Thanks.

It's not an easy fix.
It is rebuildable though. I had mine done by mrpmotorsports.com

It came out to $275.

You could luck out on Ebay too.
The chopper craze has faded as has the cheap/plentiful source of tubers to ruin.

RaceTech will also rebuild them. They quoted me about $170.

I don't know why your price is so much better than mine.

These shocks were never designed to be rebuilt and were pretty much a 'throwaway' item.

Some people will rebuild them for you but to be honest it is a false economy in the end. The design of the shock and rear suspension on the tube frame models means that the shock tries to flex at the end of the stroke, which eventually will manage to ruin the seals and you shock will almost inevitably leak. If you have it rebuilt it will go again eventually, and if you buy a used shock you don't know how much life is left in it before it too starts to leak.

The answer in the end is to take a deep breath and invest in a decent aftermarket shock such as a Penske. These still suffer from the same problem to a lesser degree, but at least are fully serviceable and rebuildable (and will give much better ride too).

Suspension is the most overlooked component on a motorcycle. Invest in a Penske the improved ride and piece of mind is worth it.

FYI: There are several recall shocks on Ebay. You could always go that way for now while you save up for the Penske.

I agree with the ebay shock = ticking timebomb.

However, I would think you would get some useful miles out of a rebuild without the $800+ cost of an aftermarket shock.

My rear shock seems to still be working and it has almost 40k miles on it.

I'm sure the Penske is worth it but crap that's a lot of moolah.

Had mine rebuilt by Racetech and it still works great after 2 years now.

I don't think I can justify spending 1/3rd of the value of the bike on one rear shock... Heck, I spent $900 on FOUR shocks with a 2" lift and a leveling kit for my Jeep for crying out loud. So $800 for one light-duty motorcycle shock sounds absurd and is a bit too rich for my blood. If I was riding a $15k bike then MAYBE that would be in the cards, but alas, I'm not riding a $15k bike (though we all know that Buell tubers are priceless in our hearts).

Looks like I'll just play the constant repair game and go with a rebuild... Thanks guys.

Don't know if this applies to M2 but the X1 shocks were recalled and will be replaced by the dealer free of charge. They actually changed mine twice. First time was six years ago and the second time was just last fall. The service guy said they had no record that it was ever replaced. Of course I did not challenge them on that...

Phlegm , i went same way, over a year ago & i ride all year round, could feel improvement over the old stock shock. i don't ride to limits. but i ride a lot.

I rebuilt my own x1 shock about 60$ fluid bushings and seals, I had to fab my own tools if its not gone there was a write up in the kv, the 250$ race tech rebuild is not a bad deal,

the reservoir is sealed by orings at each end as it is 3 pieces, you have to replenish the oil and re-charge the gas anti foam bladder I just pumped it up as far as I could, there are no published specs...

I cant find the rebuild I posted to the kv with BenM2 he did an amazing write up on upgrading the showa sadly we have lost it.
