I wonder how others are insuring their bikes. Are you putting a stated value on the bike? Those with customization, are you stating that/adding this to the policy? I have an 18 year old S1 ('96) and looking at my insurance at this time of the year.

I put the minimum amount of insurance on my bike. I use Progressive insurance and its a little over $100 per year. My feeling is if I wreck my bike, I won't get the same bike back, if I mess it up bad enough to where I can't fix it, and I still am in good enough condition to ride then I will seek out another Buell. There are two kinds of riders, those that have gone down and those who will.

I don't have comp or collision on any of them. They aren't repairable by a shop (no parts) and I'm not interested in a shop doing the work anyway. The only outcome would be totaling it and writing me a check. I'd likely buy it back if it were rebuildable so, what did I gain? The biggest risk is an uninsured driver. In that case, your personal injury is likely to be a much bigger problem than the bike anyway.

I have full coverage just because it's stupid cheap, but I don't have a comprehensive amount for the mods. Mine is $200/yr. I agree with Greg and Gary. Not expecting miracles of recovering investment; being able to recover physically afterward is most important.

I do not carry comp/collision, just a high amount of Liability and uninsured motorist. I've been through a couple of motorcycle wrecks, and my experience is that the comp/collision coverage just doesn't make sense for a irreplaceable bike.

I also use Progressive - I actually just updated my insurance this morning - took the Frog (2000 S3T) off since I non-oped it, added Gloria - 1995 S2. My rate went down $2.00

Since I have multiple bikes, each of three Buells runs like $74.00 a year. My Panhead is $159.00

Full coverage, I'm over 45, perfect driving record, about 100.00 a year per bike

I just insured my S1 with State Farm. I decided to to get comprehensive, which means a step above liability only. Comprehensive covers vandalism, theft, fire and "acts of god" (i.e. anything that isn't my fault and is unavoidable), like if a deer jumps out in front of me. It does not cover damage to the bike caused by me wrecking into someone else. It costs $202/year and has either a $50 or $100 deductible (can't remember which).

You should be aware that my insurance company, and probably most others, will only insure the blue book value of the bike if you get full coverage. My insurance lady told me my totally sweet '97 S1 with only 6000 miles came up as being valued at a paltry $1400 (retail!). So even if the bike was totaled. she said the high end of what I would receive would be this amount. She said you can negotiate somewhat with the adjuster if you can show the bike was in good condition or had a lot of aftermarket parts on it. But the anchor value of the bike would be based on the blue book value. I asked her if I could get it insured for a certain determined value that I establish. She said she offered a policy like that for older "antique" vehicles (25+ years old), but not for something as new as a 1997.

I've been hearing a lot of good things about the rates of Progressive. Not sure if they would have the same rates and limitations as State Farm, but I might give them a whirl soon. Plus maybe I can get Flo' to take a ride on my Uly so she can feel some of those good vibrations. ; )

I have full coverage from condon and skelly. They allowed me to add my buells to my vintage/classic policy. Saves me $$$$ and I name the value

Minimum liability. My bikes cost as much per year as my 93 YJ Jeep. About 200/year each. But they are not worth that much and I drop the insurance each fall. So 300/year for all 3. I hope I never need to worry about replacing any of them. Now I am looking at the new Indians. They of course will need full coverage.

Bsanorton,
I have my 70 GTO Insured with C&S (ironsure) Stated Value, They told me they my bikes had to be 25 years old to insure with them, what company did they put you with??

General,
I insured my RSS, RS & RS/3 with state farm I showed them the recent sale of the RSS on feebay for 10K they did not question it. Hopefully I never have to find out. fwiw

I even have the three S2's in my dining room stated at $7500 each on my homeowners policy, they gave me a little grief that they were motor vehicles, but I convinced them they were ART ; ) no battery or fuel..

Greg,
VERY true.. Uninsured & underinsured is a BIGGIE.. I maxed it out at 300K, I found out the hard way in 09, I ended up having to sue Progressive (my old carrier) when they couldn't find coverage for the other party,(they paid big)...long story, still going on....

Progressive does offer 3k free coverage for mods as does the Gieco THIEVES

Jolly,
$100 yr thats a good deal... what kind of coverage do you have?? With whom??

I left Gieco they were just robbing me all around, I switched everything to State Farm, I guess it all depends where you live also, NY isn't the most motorcycle friendly state. Even with a spotless license.

Beware of Allsnake the absolute worst as informed by my Attorney

Ride Safe
Chris

I was hit by a driver with Allstate in 2002, they tried to blow me off but paid once the police report and witness reports were filed.

To answer the question, I insure my bike for its full value, full coverage and stated add-ons to the maximum dollar allowed (couple extra thousand for frame mods, exhaust, polish, paint, and suspension parts). It's not enough to do the whole project again but it would be a decent start... While my bike may be 14 years old, if it's totaled I want to collect as much money as possible to replace it. Either with another Buell, or have on hand a nice down payment on an EBR 1190RX.

I used to keep my bike(s) on a separate policy from my State Farm insurance since they didn't provide any sort of discount for my rider training or other vehicles. Last year they advised me they'd restructured their "recreational vehicle" policy and they were able to beat my prior Dairyland policy price by enough to bring me over.

K12pilot - I will check on that for you, just got the renewal in the mail, not home right now , but maybe i can check online. I stated my case that the tube framers were considered classics because of limited production and no longer being made. They accepted. Found it - Ironshore Indemnity. I have 5 classic bikes with full coverage and values I state for $329 for the year. Their web site states 15 years or older, BUT they insure specialty, show, limited production, etc. They have a way to insure the tube frame Buells and even later ones I would think. Plus I have been a long time client with multiples motorcycles.
