I bought my 99 X1 brand new on the show room floor in '99 after riding a buddy's S1...they did'nt have any S1 bikes around and I did'nt think to have them track one down so I bought the X1 and began modifying it shortly after. What I ended up with was the Eurocomponents fairing set up, I think they called it the X1-Extreme..(?)...

x1 extreme

I built the bike back in 2000 or so when the fairing was still available and ever since have been making small changes along the way.. like the powdercoated tail, powdercoated frame to white and wheels to white as well...

The one thing that has "plagued" me since the build was the design of the handlebars..

With stock forks and stock trees the kit was designed with a set of clubman style bars that I was not a fan of...

clubman bars

They worked well enough but they really detracted from the finished look.

About 2 years ago I tracked down a brand new set of S2 forks with the plan to use the forks to be able to install true clip-on bars since the S2 forks are taller and extend above the top tree.

I found a brand new S2 top tree and then found LSL clip-ons that had barely any down angle, the clubman bars were a flat design to fit the tank and fairing clearances, so I needed to get as near to flat as I could. For quite some time now I have had all the parts sitting in the garage..top tree, forks, clip-ons....I was'nt quite sure the swap would work but I was pretty sure it would fit....

I finally got around to swapping out the front end yesterday and it works perfectly for this design and limitations imposed by the custom fairing!

Here is a shot of the fairing stay in case anyone wanted to see how the kit was put together.

much better cockpit view!

THANKS! yeah I'm really happy with it, its been hanging over my head and the bike wasn't getting ridden much... every time I took it out I was staring at the "unfinished" project staring back at me...really drove me nuts!

Did you need to modify it at all? Or just used the s2 tops and forks?

S2 forks, S2 top tree, forks 1.5 inches above top tree, bolt on clip-ons!

I don't get FULL travel, but I was a little limited with the club man bars anyway, and may have actually gained some travel.

I have issues with travel already. I am going to have to check out doing this. I always wanted clip ons. And the way I see other people doing it with the x1 forks seems like to much.

Looks sweet! What didn't you like about the clubmans? Just the look? While I agree the clip-ons look better I think the clubmans look nice as well. I might have to track down a set. You wouldn't happen to have measurements of them would you?

Shoot me a note, I'll see what I can do for measurements.

S2 forks and LSL clip ons really are the cleanest way to get clip-ons on a tuber

First time I see an X1 with that fairing. That set up must be really rare.

They are extremely rare in the US. The quality or more accurately the finish of the kit was not what folks here in the US wanted. I talked to the rep when I received the kit and he said a lot of the kits were returned from the states...folks wanted them to be perfectly paint ready and they were not... If you put the time into it they came out nice though..... As a result, not a lot of them in the US. I think the rep said "only a handful" actually put together in the states.
