I have a 99 X1 that is sputtering bogging and backfiring when the throttle is held steady ( it is worse the higher the PRM's are) however as soon as I crack the throttle it runs perfect and then when I let off the throttle the problems start again. I changed the spark plugs and ran some fuel injector cleaner through the gas with no luck. Any Ideas?

Could be an intake leak. At part throttle you should have lower manifold pressure and therefore less air but the leak is bypassing the throttle causing you to lean out. When you open the throttle things get more normal since the throttle is no longer restricting airflow so the leak doesn't have as much of an effect.

The intake gaskets on these bikes are notorious for leaking. You can check by squirting some carb clear at the intake manifold flanges while idling and see if the engine revs up a little bit.

Could also be a sensor or something.

Do you have a check engine light?

Intake leak would also explain why higher engine speeds might seem worse since you would have lower manifold pressure (hence higher influence from the leak) for a given throttle position compared to a lower engine speed.

I do have a check engine light ( it has not come on) This probably is coincidence but the same time this started happening my low fuel indicator light stopped working. I have not had a chance to take apart the gauges to see if it is a burned out bulb I did check the fuses and they were OK.

Hmmm. I guess that would work if you run your gas grill using disposable propane tanks, not withstanding a nozzle...

I think this one needs a step by step instructions...

No, the refillable kind. Pretty common. Disconnect the hose from the burner manifold and direct the end near the intake seals. It doesn't need to be on full, just a little.

Start with a proper TPS reset and see if that fixes your issue. Easy if you have access to ECMspy.

It's a diagnostic/tuning program for Buells. You can use it to see if you have any codes set, perhaps your bulb is burnt out or missing (as was my case).

Do a search here and on the web and become familiar with the tool. Its a tuning software that also allows you to read and fault codes among other things. A must have for anyone with a fuel injected Buell. You should be able to buy the cable and the software on eBay as a package for under $60.

Ok I bought the ECMspy I read through everything and I know this is probably a stupid question but one end of the cable connects to the PC but where on the bike does the other end connect to?

4 pin connector located on right side of steering stem.

Rubber cap, almost square, over the connector.
