Will the post 99 switch groups plug and play with a pre 99 bike?
Example a 2000 X1's switches work with a 97 S1 or would you have to reopen the connectors?

The connectors are the same. Remember that you will need the later throttle cables.

I didn't even think about the throttle cables. Thanks for the heads up. I was only thinking about it because mine are wearing out and the newer ones seem to be easier and cheaper to come by in good shape.

All the plastic switches. They're starting to break at pivot points. Second of the housing are gone too leaving open holes for moisture to collect inside. The previous owner wrecked this bike twice. I'm sure that didn't help any. I'm just trying to keep it on the road.
